There is widespread concern regarding the incidence of adverse soft-tissue reactions after metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacement. Recent National Joint Registry data have shown clear differences in the rates of failure of different designs of hip resurfacing. Our aim was to update the failure rates related to metal debris for the Articular Surface Replacement (ASR). A total of 505 of these were ...
We sought to establish the incidence of joint failure secondary to adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD) following metal-on-metal hip resurfacing in a large, three surgeon, multicentre study involving 4226 hips with a follow-up of 10 to 142 months. Three implants were studied: the Articular Surface Replacement; the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing; and the Conserve Plus. Retrieved implants underwen...
The survivorship of contemporary resurfacing arthroplasty of the hip using metal-on-metal bearings is better than that of first generation designs, but short-term failures still occur. The most common reasons for failure are fracture of the femoral neck, loosening of the component, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, reaction to metal debris and malpositioning of the component. In 2008 the Austr...
The study aimed to compare the hip joint position sense (JPS) of patients undergoing conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) or hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). A total of 40 patients who underwent hip arthroplasty (20 THA and 20 HRA) for unilateral coxarthrosis in our department from January 2008 to July 2009 were reviewed. Both groups of patients were matched in age, gender, body-mass in...
(1) Background: Metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) and resurfacing (HRA) was presumed to provide superior functional outcomes compared metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) THA. (2) Methods: We muscle mass, power, step test asymmetry, patient-reported between MoM THA/HRA MoP A of 51 THA/HRAs 23 THAs participated in the cross-sectional study at a mean 6.5 (2.4–12.5) years postoperatively. M...
INTRODUCTION Suitable treatment of early failure of total hip replacement is critical in younger patients, as bone stock is lost and the functional outcome is impaired. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 56-year-old Caucasian woman with early failure of hip resurfacing arthroplasty. While revision is usually performed with a conventional hip implant, this case report describes for the ...
We describe a patient who sustained a peri-prosthetic fracture of the femoral neck two weeks after undergoing a resurfacing procedure for osteoarthritis of the hip. The fracture was minimally displaced and a satisfactory outcome was obtained following conservative treatment.
