BACKGROUND Aim of our study is to investigate the clinical and immunological outcomes according to first-line HAART adherence in a large cohort of HIV-infected patients in Burkina Faso. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted between 2001 and 2009 among patients from two urban medical centers [St. Camille Medical Center (CMSC) and "Pietro Annigoni" Biomolecular Research Center (CERBA)] an...

BACKGROUND Single-dose nevirapine (sdNVP)-based regimens reduce mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but result in resistance to NVP and may reduce the ability of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) used for prevention of MTCT (PMTCT). The impact that sdNVP has on survival in the era of increasing access to HAART is unknown. METHODS We developed a...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW An estimated 33 million people are living with HIV and universal access remains a dream for millions of people. By the end of year 2008, four million people were on treatment; however, over five million needed treatment, and in 2007, there were 2.7 million new infections. Without significant improvement in prevention, we are unlikely to meet universal access targets including ...

The South African HIV National Strategic Plan (NSP) aims to provide access to appropriate treatment, care and support to 80% of the HIV-infected population by 2011. By mid-2008, highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) was being dispensed to about half the HIV-infected population in need. Reaching the NSP targets will require full mobilisation of all of South Africa's health facilities. W...

We describe the antiviral effect of maraviroc in a patient who had been shedding high levels of HIV-1 in seminal fluid for three years despite an undetectable blood plasma viral load. Adding maraviroc to HAART stopped the seminal shedding. We discuss the mechanisms involved and the effect on sexual transmission.

In 2003, for the first time since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the number of newly diagnosed HIV infections in Germany increased considerably compared to the previous year. The increase was largely restricted to men who have sex with men (MSM) from larger cities. In this group the number of newly diagnosed HIV infections increased about 30% compared to 2002....

Little is known about the long-term clinical outcomes for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients who have received highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Determining factors associated with long-term clinical outcomes early in the course of treatment may allow modifications to be made for patients who are at a greater risk of treatment failure. To evaluate these factors, we...

BACKGROUND Long-term regular clinic follow up is an important component of HIV care. We determined the frequency and characteristics of HIV-infected patients lost to follow up from a London HIV clinic, and factors associated with loss to all HIV follow up in the UK. METHODS We identified 1859 HIV-infected adults who had registered and attended a London clinic on one or more occasions between ...

BACKGROUND Detectable HIV RNA in mothers at delivery is an important risk factor for HIV transmission to newborns. Our hypothesis was that, in migrant women, the risk of detectable HIV RNA at delivery is greater owing to late HIV diagnosis. Therefore, we examined pregnant women by regional provenance and measured variables that could be associated with detectable HIV RNA at delivery. METHODS ...

This study evaluated 1433 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients starting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), 409 (28%) of whom had prior nucleoside experience and achieved an HIV load of <400 copies/mL by 24 weeks of therapy. Three hundred seven patients experienced virus rebound during a total of 2773.3 person-years of follow-up. There was a higher rate of virus reboun...
