We report here the draft genome sequences of four vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains from South Korean hospitals participating in a nationwide laboratory surveillance program for vancomycin-intermediate and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus All strains harbor mutations in the walKR, graSR, and/or rpoB genes that are known frequently mutated determinants of VISA.

LTX-109 and eight other antimicrobial agents were evaluated against 155 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates, including strains resistant to vancomycin and strains with decreased susceptibility to daptomycin and linezolid, by microdilution tests to determine MICs. Time-kill assays were performed against representative MRSA, vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), and va...

OBJECTIVES To examine the activity of ceftaroline against reduced-vancomycin-susceptible MRSA isolates. METHODS One-hundred and three MRSA blood culture isolates (predominantly ST239-MRSA-III), with varying vancomycin phenotypes, had their ceftaroline MICs determined by broth microdilution and MIC Evaluator strip (Oxoid-Thermo Fisher). Statistical analyses were performed that examined relatio...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinical samples in Shiraz hospitals. METHODS From March to December 2012, 100 S. aureus isolates (mainly from wound and blood) were collected from three hospitals in Shiraz, south of Iran. After identification of Staphylococcus aureus by biochemical, microbiological...

Vancomycin resistance in enterococci, predominantly Enterococcus faecium, developed in the latter half of the 1980s, and the long anticipated development of vancomycin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus has now occurred. A number of vancomycin-intermediate strains have been described, and these strains have abnormal, thickened cell walls in the presence of vancomycin. Two mechanisms of resista...

We identified naturally occurring Staphylococcus aureus mutants of the restriction modification pathway SauI, including bovine lineage ST151. In a model of vancomycin resistance transfer from Enterococcus faecalis, ST151 isolates are 500 times more susceptible than human S. aureus isolates. The eradication of "hyperrecipient" strains may reduce the evolution of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus.

We have previously reported the establishment of a Staphylococcus aureus laboratory strain, 10 3d1, having reduced susceptibility to daptomycin and heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) phenotype. The strain was generated in vitro by serial daptomycin selection (Camargo, I. L., H. M. Neoh, L. Cui, and K. Hiramatsu, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 52:4289-4299, 2008). Here we expl...

Staphylococcus aureus is colonized in the human nasal cavity and would contaminate hospital and therapeutic environments. This bacterium has a genetic diversity in terms of resistance to antimicrobial agents. Therefore, the purpose of this study was identificatied of Methicillin and Vancomycin resistant genes in Staphylococcus aureus strains which has been isolated from the nasal cavity. 189 pa...

We report the draft genome sequences of three multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus strains of sequence type 247 (ST247). The methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) SA1450/94 is vancomycin susceptible, while the clinical MRSA isolate S. aureus SA137/93A and its spontaneous laboratory mutant SA137/93G are characterized by intermediate vancomycin susceptibility.

We report characterization of a methicillin-susceptible, vancomycin-resistant bloodstream isolate of Staphylococcus aureus recovered from a patient in Brazil. Emergence of vancomycin resistance in methicillin-susceptible S. aureus would indicate that this resistance trait might be poised to disseminate more rapidly among S. aureus and represents a major public health threat.
