Some properties of eight strains of Newcastle disease virus (cell-fusing ability, hemolysin, heat stability of hemagglutinin or of hemolysin) do not correlate with virulence of these strains.

Fifty-six Newcastle disease virus strains collected from 2000 to 2006 could be grouped into subgenotype VIId. However, they displayed cumulative mutations in and around the linear epitope of hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (residues 345 to 353) with time. The antigenicities of the variants that became predominant in Korea differ from each other and from the wild type.

Background and Aims: Influenza vaccine production process is time-consuming with little-to-no cross-protection which requires annual adjustment. The construction of a universal vaccine to deal with the pandemics and epidemics which occasionally threat human population is the aim of many researches worldwide. Today, influenza vaccines are mostly against two major antigenic proteins, hemagglutini...

Introduction: According to marked advances in bioinformatics studies, development of influenza vaccines has been greatly modified in many studies. In this study, we have designed a multi-epitope recombinant protein, consisting of several conserved epitopes from Hemagglutinin protein of the H1N1 and H5N1 strains of Influenza virus by immunoinformatics approaches. Materials and Methods: The regis...

Infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) is an unclassified Orthomyxovirus that has been shown to contain a segmented genome with eight single-stranded RNA species coding for 10 viral proteins. Four major structural proteins were characterized in the present study: two glycosylated proteins with estimated molecular masses of 42 and 50 kDa, one 66-kDa phosphoprotein, and one 22-kDa protein. Examina...

Influenza viruses do not encode any proteases and must rely on host proteases for the proteolytic activation of their surface hemagglutinin proteins in order to fuse with the infected host cells. Recent progress in the understanding of human proteases responsible for influenza virus hemagglutinin activation has led to the identification of members of the type II transmembrane serine proteases T...

Background: Newcastle disease is a major avian disease that causes enormous economic loss in poultry industry. There have been a number of reports on the suitability of plant-based recombinant vaccine against this disease. Fusion (F) and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) epitopes of the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) represent the major immunogenic sites for development of recomb...

The presence of low-pathogenic H7 avian influenza virus (AIV), which is associated with live-bird markets (LBM) in the Northeast United States, was first detected in 1994 and, despite efforts to eradicate the virus, surveillance of these markets has resulted in numerous isolations of H7 AIVs from several states from 1994 through 1998. The hemagglutinin, nonstructural, and matrix genes from repr...

UNLABELLED Influenza viruses expressing chimeric hemagglutinins (HAs) are important tools in the quest for a universal vaccine. Using cryo-electron tomography, we have determined the structures of a chimeric HA variant that comprises an H1 stalk and an H5 globular head domain (cH5/1 HA) in native and antibody-bound states. We show that cH5/1 HA is structurally different from native HA, displayi...
