X-ray techniques are commonly used in the fields of non-destructive testing (NDT) of industrial parts, material characterization, security and examination of various other specimens. The most used techniques for obtaining images are radioscopy for 2D and computed tomography (CT) for 3D imaging. Apart from these two imaging techniques, where X-ray radiation penetratesmatter, other methods like r...

We report a measurement of the average B-hadron lifetime using data collected with the SLD detector at the SLC in 1993. An inclusive analysis selected three-dimensional vertices with B-hadron lifetime information in a sample of 50k Z0 decays. A lifetime of 1.564±0.030 (stat)±0.037 (syst) ps was extracted from the decay length distribution of these vertices using a binned maximum-likelihood meth...

One of the major physics topics of the CBM experiment is the study of the production of open charm in nucleusnucleus collisions at FAIR energies. For this purpose, the CBM Collaboration is planning to use a high-performance Micro-Vertex Detector (MVD) based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) [1]. CBM running conditions call for a MVD with high granularity, radiation tolerance, and readou...

The results of model calculations on nuclide yields produced in selected scenarios using reactions with U nuclei are presented. The calculation combines the modelling of the initial reaction mechanism, the deexcitation process including the fission competition with the prediction of the nuclide production in the fission of excited U and all daughter nuclei produced in the evaporation cascade. T...

We have evaluated the performance of the CDF plug tile/fiber calorimeter under the radiation environment at a luminosity of 1 1033 cm 2s 1 at TeV33. The issues covered are the radiation damage, the anode current of photomultipliers, and the energy miss-measurement due to the minimum bias event pile-ups. The plug calorimeter is expected to perform as precision calorimetry in the pseudorapidity r...

We compare the ratio of the strong coupling Q, measured in Z” --) b8 events to that measured in Z” -+ qq (q=u,d,a,c) in the SLD experiment at SLAC. Z” -* b6 events are identified with the aid of a precision silicon vertex detector by requiring that at least thiee charged tracks pass more than 3.017 from the Z” decay vertex. This method has an estimated efficieticy of 54% with a purity of 71%. J...

The origin and structure of the Earth's crust is still a major question. Traditionally the nearby crust of the Earth has been explored in great detail with echo-sounding or gravimetric techniques. Current measurements are based largely on these techniques, which has intrinsic uncertainties. In the present talk, a novel method with cosmic-ray muons to create a direct snapshot of the density prof...

We have investigated the jet resolution of the CMS calorimeter using the CMSIM GEANT simulation. Dijet decays of Z and Z 0 (mZ0 = 1 TeV) bosons were used as a benchmark process. 1 Simulation of the Calorimeter The calorimeter was simlated using GEANT3 within the framework of the CMS general simulation program CMSIM (version 111). The electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) consisted of 23 cm PbWO4 c...

Two-particle correlations of identical charged pion pairs from Au+Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV were measured by the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC. Data for the most central (0–15%) events were analyzed with Bertsch-Pratt (BP) and Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii (YKP) parameterizations using pairs with rapidities of 0.4 < y < 1.3 and transverse momenta 0.1 < kT < 1.4 GeV/c. The Bertsch-Pratt radii dec...

The intensity and composition of cosmic radiation at atmosphere altitudes up to 30 km o.s.l. are modulated by solar activity and strongly depend on geophysical characteristics and atmosphere parameters. An accurate evaluation of secondary neutron energy spectra may constitute a valuable contribution to a better knowledge of the primary cosmic ray intensity. Moreover, because of neutron high Rel...
