A formal model for description of passive and active timing attacks is presented, studied and compared with other security concepts. It is based on a timed process algebra and on a concept of observations which make only a part of system behaviour visible. From this partial information which contains also timing of actions an intruder tries to deduce some private system activities.

Tile most common assumption about intention in discourse is that the primary intention of discourse is to eomlnunicate and receive information. This is a founding assumption of every formal model of discourse meaning that I am aware of. Formal Description Techniques have been widely used for the speciication of traditional networked applications. They have not been applied to the speciication of new applications such as multimedia systems yet. In this paper, we examine the FDT Estelle with respect to its suitability for multimedia system speciication and automatic derivation of eecient implementations. We show that it is possi...

We present a formal model for the coordination of interactions in service-oriented systems. This model provides a declarative semantics for the language SRML that is being developed under the FET-GC2 project SENSORIA for modelling and reasoning about complex services at the abstract business level. In SRML, interactions are conversational in the sense that they involve a number of correlated ev...

We deepen and extend resource-level theorizing about sustainable competitive advantage by developing a formal model of resource development in competitive markets. Our model incorporates three important barriers to imitation: time compression diseconomies, causal ambiguity and the magnitude of ...xed investments. Time compression diseconomies are derived from a micro-model of resource developme...

The software application domain of customer-oriented telephony is worth the attention of specialists in formal methods. Primarily this paper is a tutorial about customer-oriented telephony. For many years, the use of formal development methods has been advocated for the purpose of veriication. It is of rst importance to start from a speciication which actually expresses the requirements for the system to be developed. The work described here was performed in the framework of a case study where several formal speciication techniques, and the corresponding tools, have been used conc...

There is undoubtedly a huge gap between the level of formality currently in use in mainstream software engineering and the \best practise" advocated by academics and practised by a small sector of industry involved in critical applications. This paper presents some results of recent research which are building bridges between these two approaches: on the one hand, developing formal methods whic...
