Cross-flow ultrafiltration of macromolecular solutions in a module with microchannels is expected to have the advantages of fast diffusion from the membrane surface and a high ratio of membrane surface area to feed liquid volume. Cross-flow ultrafiltration modules with microchannels are expected to be used for separation and refining and as membrane reactors in microchemical processes. Though t...

We calculated the change of the magnetic flux through the surface encircled by the Earth’s orbit. This change is associated with the magnetic flux transfer by the solar wind flow and exhibits clear 22-year periodicity. The magnetic flux transferred by the solar wind is of the same order of magnitude as the flux of the main solar magnetic field through the northern hemisphere of the Sun. There s...

The steady, coaxial flow in which two immiscible, incompressible fluids of differing densities move past each other slowly in a vertical cylindrical tube has a continuum of possibilities due to the arbitrariness of the interface between the fluids. By invoking the presence of surface tension to at least restrict the shape of any interface to that of a circular arc or full circle, we consider th...

We study the time evolution of unstable dSp × S configurations with flux in theories of gravity with a cosmological constant. For certain values of the flux, we identify a stable configuration to which these unstable solutions flow. For other values of the flux the sphere wants to decompactify, regardless of the sign of the initial perturbation.

Recent studies of the fluxes of sodium and chloride across euryhaline teleost fish have shown that acclimation to fresh water involves a sharp reduction in the flux of both ions (Evans, 1967 c, 1969; Motais, 1967; Maetz et al. 1967 a, b; Potts & Evans, 1967; Ports et al. 1967). It has been shown, at least in Fundulus heteroclitus (Potts & Evans, 1967), Tilapia mossambica (Potts et al. 1967), Xi...

This paper concerns the development and application of a gas-kinetic scheme based on the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) model for the Navier–Stokes equations in the study of hypersonic viscous flow. Firstly, we extend the gas-kinetic Navier–Stokes solver [K. Xu, A gas-kinetic BGK scheme for the Navier–Stokes equations and its connection with artificial dissipation and Godunov method, J. Comput. Ph...

We propose a method to control electromagnetic flux in an almost arbitrary way in wavelength and subwavelength scales. The capability of subwavelength flux control is enabled by the evanescent waves induced in a class of inhomogeneous anisotropic media with a near-zero permittivity component. By designing the spatial profile of the other permittivity component in such inhomogeneous media, the f...

Highly collimated, plasma-filled magnetic-flux tubes are frequently observed on galactic, stellar, and laboratory scales. We propose that a single, universal magnetohydrodynamic pumping process explains why such collimated, plasma-filled magnetic-flux tubes are ubiquitous. Experimental evidence from carefully diagnosed laboratory simulations of astrophysical jets confirms this assertion and is ...

We consider an hyperbolic conservation law with discontinuous flux. Such partial differential equation arises in different applicative problems, in particular we are motivated by a model of traffic flow. We provide a new formulation in terms of Riemann Solvers. Moreover, we determine the class of Riemann Solvers which provide existence and uniqueness of the corresponding weak entropic solutions...

We show that a quantum Hall bilayer with the total filling nu = 1 should exhibit a dynamical regime similar to the flux flow in large Josephson junctions. This analogy may explain a conspicuous peak in the interlayer tunneling conductance [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5808 (2000)]. The flux flow is likely to be spatiotemporally chaotic at low-bias voltage, which will manifest itself through broadband n...
