The free and bound sialic acid content of cerebrospinal fluid from patients with positive evidence (by CSF culture) of pyogenic and tuberculous meningitis was determined. The free sialic acid content was significantly raised only in cases of pyogenic meningitis, but not in tuberculous or other types of the disease.
This study investigated seasonal changes in the metabolic performance of spermatozoa and activity of the antioxidant enzymes in the seminal plasma of three wild boar/domestic pigs (aged 1.5 to 2.5 years) and the activity of the antioxidant enzymes in fluids of the cauda epididymidis and vesicular glands from 16 wild boar/domestic pig hybrids (aged 1 to 3 years). Parameters of the sperm metaboli...
When an empyema with an exclusively lymphocytic cell content assumes a ‘pale creamy’ appearance, there is a possibility that the empyema has evolved into a pseudochylothorax. Otherwise, in the absence of either pseudochylothorax or chylothorax, a tuberculous pleural effusion with a >90% content of lymphocytes would be expected to have a serous instead of a pale creamy appearance, even when the ...
orpiment, getchellite and stibnite from zarshuran deposit, nw iran, exhibit extensive as-sb substitution. there are four known minerals along as2s3-sb2s3 join, i.e. orpiment (as2s3), wakabayashilite [(as,sb)20s30], getchellite (assbs3) and stibnite (sb2s3). extensive mineralogical studies by scanning electron microscope (sem) and electron probe micro-analyzer (epma) indicate that getchellite fr...
SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS ON SYNOVIAL FLUID AND SOLUTIONS OF MUCIN AND HYALURONATE IN THE PRESENCE OF METHYLENE BLUE SHOWED THAT: 1. Dialyzed synovial fluid was not metachromatic. 2. Albumin and gelatin at a concentration of 1 mg. per ml. inhibited the metachromasy of strong chromotropes. 3. Reduction of the protein of synovial fluid by the use of proteolytic enzymes still did not make th...
Water plays an important role in geological processes. Providing constraints on what may influence the distribution of aqueous fluids is thus crucial to understanding how water impacts Earth's geodynamics. Here we demonstrate that ductile flow exerts a dynamic control on water-rich fluid circulation in mantle shear zones. Based on amphibole distribution and using dislocation slip-systems as a p...
OBJECTIVE To compare the electrolyte composition of pregnancies complicated with twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) with that of physiologic pregnancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS Amniotic fluid samples from 16 pregnancies were studied. Specimens were obtained from recipient sacs in 10 pregnancies undergoing fetoscopy for severe midtrimester TTTS. Additionally, 6 amniotic fluid samples were ob...
Examination of the lumbar cerebrospinal fluid in the diagnosis of cerebral tumour is less often resorted to than formerly, partly because in some instances there may be a risk of coning after lumbar puncture, but more especially because arteriography and ventriculography are now more frequently used for locating the tumour and examination of the ventricular fluid is often found to be more conve...
Extensive mineralogical studies by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) indicate that getchellite fr...
of the known mycotoxins, the most important in relation to direct hazard to human health are the aflatoxins produced by a large number of aspergillus spp. to determine the level of exposure of aflatoxin from mother to child and its mode of transfer. 70 pregnant women in the labor ward of the federal medical centre yola were investigated for their aflatoxin content by using the velasco fluorotox...
