The spectrum of a Gelfand pair (K nN, K), where N is a nilpotent group, can be embedded in a Euclidean space. It is shown that the extended polar space for the sporadic Fischer group Fi22 is the only extended polar space which has more than two extended planes on a block and is not isomorphic to a quotient of an affine polar space over GF(2). New examples of EGQ(4, 1) and EGQ(4, 2) are presented as well.

This paper describes the calculation of the character table of the 8-dimensional orthogonal group of maximal index over the field with 3 elements. The group is of interest as it is a subgroup of relatively small index in the sporadic simple group M(23) defined by B. Fischer [2]. The group also has an outer automorphism group of order 24, isomorphic to the symmetric group on 4 symbols.
