We have demonstrated electroswitchable emission and coloration using a novel composite material containing luminescent europium(III) complex Eu(hfa)(3)(H(2)O)(2) and diheptyl viologen HV(2+). The photoluminescence of the Eu(III) complex was controlled by the electrochemical coloration of HV(2+)via intermolecular energy transfer mechanisms.

Europium and terbium complexes of two structurally related ligands have been evaluated as optical probes to monitor changes in lysosomal pH; calibration using ionophores and fluorescent probes allows monitoring of the time dependence of lysosomal pH change, examining the green/red intensity ratio from internalised Tb-Eu complexes.

A new tripodal ligand has been designed by connecting pyridine-based coordination units to a rigid triptycene moiety. Its reaction with europium(III) provides three-dimensional tetranuclear edifices, whose structural and photophysical characteristics as well as host-guest interactions are discussed in this contribution.

We report the development of a novel europium nanoparticle-based immunoassay (ENIA) for rapid detection of influenza A and influenza B viruses. The ENIA demonstrated sensitivities of 90.7% (147/162) for influenza A viruses and 81.80% (9/11) for influenza B viruses compared to those for an in-house reverse transcription (RT)-PCR assay in testing of influenza-positive clinical samples.

Luminescence-decay measurements in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography analyses were used to study the relationship between rates of catalysis and water-coordination numbers of europium-based precatalysts in the aqueous Mukaiyama aldol reaction. A correlation between reactivity and water-coordination number was observed and is reported here.

A new tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand bearing triphenylphosphine oxide moieties appended to the 3-position of the pyrazolyl rings is reported and shown to display varied coordination chemistry from tridentate N(2)O coordination with thallium to hexadentate N(3)O(3) coordination with europium.
