BACKGROUND Ten percent of all episodes of epistaxis occur in the posterior nose, making posterior epistaxis a commonly encountered emergency for both emergency department physicians and otolaryngologists. Severe idiopathic nontraumatic posterior nasal epistaxis is an otolaryngologic emergency that occurs primarily in middle aged and elderly individuals who often have underlying chronic cardiac ...
BACKGROUND We aimed to examine cases of brucellosis that presented with severe thrombocytopenia and hemorrhagic diathesis. METHODS A total of 10 brucellosis cases with severe thrombocytopenia were included in this case-series study. Patients' files were reviewed for their clinical and laboratory findings, as well as clinical outcomes and complications. Platelet counts of < 20,000/mm³ were dia...
OBJECTIVES The study presents the experience of the Coltea ENT Clinic with the most common emergency in ENT pathology. RESULTS The study group comprises 51.24% women and 48.76% men with 73.14% of patients (177) coming from urban areas and the remaining 26.86% (65) from rural areas. The total number of days of hospitalization is 1411, representing an average of 5.83 days / patient. Epistaxis w...
Hereditary Hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), or Rendu-Osler-Weber disease, is a vascular anomaly characterized by multiple dilations of skin and mucosa capillaries and venules. It is an autosomal dominant disease, equally distributed between both genders and its incidence is of 1-2/100.000 inhabitants.1 Bleeding may occur in numerous places; however, epistaxis is the most common, present in 90%...
OBJECTIVE To present our experience of endoscopic electrocoagulation of sphenopalatine artery for persistent posterior epistaxis despite conservative measures. METHODS Seven endoscopic electrocoagulation of sphenopalatine artery was done for four patients from early 2001 till the present for recalcitrant epistaxis despite conservative treatment. The basic principle of this surgical method is ...
The case of a man who presented complaining of epistaxis is reported. He had coarctation repair 18 years previously. Subsequent investigation revealed an aortobronchial fistula resulting from false aneurysm formation distal to the original vessel anastamosis. This was repaired at surgery, the patient suffering a minor stroke, before rehabilitation and good recovery.
BACKGROUND Epistaxis is a common otolaryngology emergency and is often controlled with first-line interventions such as cautery, hemostatic agents, or anterior nasal packing. A subset of patients will continue to bleed and require more aggressive therapy. METHODS Intractable spontaneous epistaxis was traditionally managed with posterior nasal packing and prolonged hospital admission. In an ef...
BACKGROUND Mycotic pseudoaneurysm from the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA) secondary to an invasive aspergillus sinusitis is rare. Surgical intervention with ICA ligation is generally accepted for most mycotic aneurysms or pseudoaneurysms. When presented with massive epistaxis due to a fungal aspergillus ICA invasion, mortality rates are high. METHODS We present the cas...
The first mention of epistaxis in medical literature dates back in the year 18672. Bleeding originating from the anterior nasal cavity was managed with packing the nostril with pledgets. When the bleeding was originating from the posterior nasal cavity, a pledget secured in a wire was passed down the nostril to tamponade the posterior nasal space and arrest the bleed. In 1901, McKenzie started ...
