portant component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (1). Because of its poor aqueous solubility, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) presents a challenge when developing a formulation for oral administration. Many approaches have been used to improve the in vitro dissolution of CoQ10. Some of the approaches include complexation with cyclodextrins (2), preparation of redispersible dry emulsion (3), solid ...
Grain amaranthus in its ordinary state may be modified by germination to perform extraordinary role as emulsifier for our fastgrowing food industry with a concomitant increase in food production to satisfy the everincreasing population of the world with its associated food insecurity. Hence, this study aimed at determining the optimum germination temperature for the maximum improvement of the f...
BACKGROUND Thermostable bacterial lipases occupy a place of prominence among biocatalysts owing to their novel, multifold applications and resistance to high temperature and other operational conditions. The capability of lipases to catalyze a variety of novel reactions in both aqueous and nonaqueous media presents a fascinating field for research, creating interest to isolate novel lipase prod...
A cluster (27 kbp) of genes responsible for the biosynthesis of the amphipathic, polysaccharide bioemulsifier emulsan from the oil-degrading Acinetobacter lwoffii RAG-1 was isolated and characterized. The complete sequence of this cluster, termed wee, consisted of 20 ORFs. One set of 17 ORFs was transcribed in one direction, while a second set of three ORFs, 607 bp upstream of the first, was tr...
In this work, biosurfactant production by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain was optimized using low-cost substrates. The highest biosurfactant production (3.2 g/l) was obtained using a culture medium containing corn steep liquor (10% (v/v)) and molasses (10% (w/v)). The biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water up to 30 mN/m, and exhibited a high emulsifying activity (E24=60%), with a cr...
Hydrolysis parameters (temperature, E/S ratio, pH, and time) for acid protease (from Aspergillus usamii) hydrolysis of wheat gluten were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) using emulsifying activity index (EAI) as the response factor. A temperature of 48.9°C, E/S ratio of 1.60%, pH 3.0, hydrolysis time of 2.5 h was found to be the optimum condition to obtain wheat gluten hydrolysat...
The newly isolated from industrial wastewater Pseudomonas fluorescens strain HW-6 produced glycolipid biosurfactants at high concentrations (1.4-2.0 g l(-1)) when grown on hexadecane as a sole carbon source. Biosurfactants decreased the surface tension of the air/ water interface by 35 mN m(-1) and possessed a low critical micelle concentration value of 20 mg l(-1), which indicated high surface...
In situ groundwater remediation may be achieved using stationary permeable barriers created by the injection of a substrate, such as innocuous vegetable oil, into the contaminated aquifer. The oil provides the electron donor stimulating microorganisms to degrade or sequester many contaminants. At present, little is known about the best procedures to use when injecting oil into an aquifer. In th...
Residual effectiveness of plaster matrix formulations of temephos and temephos plus an emulsifier (Atlox 3409F) were evaluated against Aedes aegypti larvae during an 8-wk period. Formulations of 2% and 5% (AI) Atlox with 5% (AI) temephos yielded 100% larval mortality for 8 wk. A 5% temephos formulation without the addition of the emulsifier produced 100% larval mortality through only 1 wk.
