Isolated non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), especially isolated β-glucan, are reported to have prebiotic effects in pigs. However, little information is available on their possible functional properties when they are still present in the fibrous matrix of whole cereals. Hulless barleys (hB) are rich but variable sources of β-glucan. In order to evaluate their potential as functional feeds, an in...

In order to evaluate the intercropping of barley-faba bean and choose the best planting pattern a field experiment was conducted in the growing seasons of 2015-2016 using a randomized complete block design with 8 treatments and 3 replications in Ramhormoz Khuzestan, Iran. The treatments were barley sole cropping with 20 cm spacing between rows, faba bean sole cropping with 40 cm spacing between...

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels of germinated barley (GB) on live performance and carcass traits in broiler chickens. The experiment lasted for 5 weeks starting from 7 days of age and ending at 42 days of age. Chicks (Ross 308) were fed six dietary treatments including a corn–soy diet (corn diet), a barley–soy diet (barley diet), a barley diet plus enzymes...

Chen et al. (Reports, 16 January 2015, p. 248) argued that early Tibetan agriculturalists pushed the limits of farming up to 4000 meters above sea level. We contend that this argument is incompatible with the growing requirements of barley. It is necessary to clearly define past crop niches to create better models for the complex history of the occupation of the plateau.
