Time irreversibility can be qualitatively defined as the degree of a signal for temporal asymmetry. Recently, a time irreversibility characterization method based on entropies of positive and negative increments has been proposed for experimental signals and applied to heart rate variability (HRV) data (central cardiovascular system (CVS)). The results led to interesting information as a time a...

This paper presents a prediction error variance reduction procedure based on fractional digital differentiation with negative order. This reduction is achieved by increasing correlation in the signals. Applications to ECG signals show that savings of more than one bit per residual signal sample can be attained. Keywords—Linear prediction, fractional differentiation, ECG signal.

One of the biggest challenges in averaging ECG or EEG signals is to overcome temporal misalignments and distortions, due to uncertain timing or complex non-stationary dynamics. Standard methods average individual leads over an collection of epochs on a time-sample by timesample basis, even when multi-electrode signals are available. Here we propose a method that averages multi electrode recordi...

The paper presents a new algorithm for ECG signal compression based on local extreme extraction, adaptive hysteretic filtering and LZW coding. Basically the method consists in smoothing the ECG signal with a Savitzky-Golay filter, extraction of the local minima and maxima, a hysteretic filtering and LZW coding. The reconstruction of the ECG signal is done by cubic interpolation. The algorithm i...

The Problem Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is one of the main causes of sudden cardiac death in the Western world. It is a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat chaotically, rendering it unable to pump blood. VF is usually preceded by ventricular tachycardia (VT), which is another type of arrhythmia that also constitutes a medical emergency. It is crucial for the patient to receive im...

During the acquisition of Electrocardiogram Signals (ECG), various interferences distort the signal. Adaptive filters have been widely used as noise cancellers. Traditional optimization techniques have been very popular because of their advantages. Least Mean Square (LMS) is a traditional optimization technique which is gradient based. This method converges very quickly to an optimal solution a...

Electromyography (EMG) is a tool routinely used for a variety of applications in a very large breadth of disciplines. However, this signal is inevitably contaminated by various artifacts originated from different sources. Electrical activity of heart muscles, electrocardiogram (ECG), is one of sources which affects the EMG signals due to the proximity of the collection sites to the heart and ma...

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most important and widely used method to study the heart related diseases. The detailed study of ECG graph by the medical practitioner helps him to understand and identify the condition of the heart. Based on the information retrieved from the ECG graph the patient can be given proper treatment. The person having a medical history of heart ailments will have to ma...

OBJECTIVES Telemonitoring of vital signs is an established option in treatment of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). In order to allow for early detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) which is highly prevalent in the CHF population telemonitoring programs should include electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. It was therefore the aim to extend our current home monitoring system based on mobile ...
