The effective implementation of early warning is one of the best investments for disaster prevention and mitigation. In the last decade, we have witnessed strong efforts and progress towards better risk detection, monitoring and prediction. However, the best warnings are ineffective if they cannot be distributed in a timely way and targeted to people at risk. With the evolvement of new Informat...
An important component of Early Warning Systems (EWS) for man-made and natural hazards is the command and control unit’s Graphical User Interface (GUI). All relevant information of an EWS is concentrated in this GUI and offered to human operators. However, when designing the GUI, not only the user experience and the GUI’s screens are relevant, but also the frameworks and technologies that the G...
Globalization and environmental change, social and demographic determinants and health system capacity are significant drivers of infectious diseases which can also act as epidemic precursors. Thus, monitoring changes in these drivers can help anticipate, or even forecast, an upsurge of infectious diseases. The European Environment and Epidemiology (E3) Network has been built for this purpose a...
A new approach for Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS) is presented that uses wireless, self-organising mesh sensor networks. To develop the prototype of such IT-infrastructures, we follow a model-driven system development paradigm. Structure and behaviour models of network topologies in specific geographic regions are coupled with wave signal analysing algorithms, alarming protocols, conve...
Public health and conflict early warning are evolving rapidly in response to technology changes for the gathering, management, analysis and communication of data. It is expected that these changes will provide an unprecedented ability to monitor, detect, and respond to crises. One of the potentially most profound and lasting expected change affects the roles of the various actors in providing a...
The SAFE (Satellites For Epidemiology) project is co-funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and coordinated by MEDES (FRANCE). In a twoday earthquake readiness exercise that was held on the island of Crete, Greece, on November 5-6, 2007, it demonstrated a component-based system for health early warning. The exercise that was coordinated by the Prefecture of Heraklion and FORTH-ICS, involved ...
BACKGROUND Early warning systems (EWS) are management tools to predict the occurrence of epidemics of infectious diseases. While climate-based EWS have been developed for malaria, no standard protocol to evaluate and compare EWS has been proposed. Additionally, there are several neglected tropical diseases whose transmission is sensitive to environmental conditions, for which no EWS have been p...
Warnings can help prevent damage and harm if they are issued timely and provide information that help responders and population to adequately prepare for the disaster to come. Today, there are many indicator and sensor systems that are designed to reduce disaster risks, or issue early warnings. In this paper we analyze the different systems in the light of the initial decisions that need to be ...
Current efforts to predict malaria epidemics focus on the role weather anomalies can play in epidemic prediction. Alongside weather monitoring and seasonal climate forecasts, epidemiological, social and environmental factors can also play a role in predicting the timing and severity of malaria epidemics. Such factors can be incorporated into a framework for malaria early warning.
