A method for measuring the pair interaction potential between colloidal particles by extrapolation measurement of collective structure to infinite dilution is presented and explored using simulation and experiment. The method is particularly well suited to systems in which the colloid is fluorescent and refractive index matched with the solvent. The method involves characterizing the potential ...

Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance was used to measure the freezing behaviour of lamellar phases of phosphatidylcholine in water and in solutions of sorbitol. Both solute and solvent were deuterated in different series of experiments to allow the calculation of the partitioning of solute and solvent molecules between the lamellar phase and unfrozen bulk solution. Sorbitol, as well as water...

High α-cellulose has been dissolved in two non-degrading solvent systems like dimethyl sulfoxide/paraformaldehyde (DMSO/PF) and N,N-dimethyl acetamide/lithium chloride (DMAc/LiCl) and then fractionated to different molecular weight fractions by regeneration technique. Esters of the different molecular weight fractions of cellulose have been prepared having substitution chain length of C2-C5 usi...

The structural and electronic properties of all-thiophene dendrimers and dendrons in solution have been evaluated using very different theoretical approaches based on quantum mechanical (QM) and hybrid QM/molecular mechanics (MM) methodologies: (i) calculations on minimum energy conformations using an implicit solvation model in combination with density functional theory (DFT) or time-dependent...

Microspheres are multiparticulate drug delivery systems which are prepared to obtain prolonged or controlled drug delivery to improve bioavailability, stability and to target the drug to specific site at a predetermined rate. They are made from polymeric waxy or other protective materials such as natural, semi synthetic and synthetic polymers. Microspheres are characteristically free flowing po...

We investigated which factors govern the critical steps of cation exchange in metal-organic frameworks by studying the effect of various solvents on the insertion of Ni(2+) into MOF-5 and Co(2+) into MFU-4l. After plotting the extent of cation insertion versus different solvent parameters, trends emerge that offer insight into the exchange processes for both systems. This approach establishes a...

Herein a novel class of solvent systems for cellulose is introduced. Surprisingly, organic electrolyte solutions, which contain just a small molar fraction of ionic liquid, dissolve instantaneously large amounts of cellulose. The solvation properties of the solvent systems, required for dissolving the polymer, are discussed here.

Replica exchange methods (REMs) are increasingly used to improve sampling in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of biomolecular systems. However, despite having been shown to be very effective on model systems, the application of REM in complex systems such as for the simulation of protein and peptide folding in explicit solvent has not been objectively tested in detail. Here we present a comp...

A series of diazoaminobenzene derivatives (seven) in which the substituents have a wide range of electronic characters are set out to understand the involvement of the substituent identity in controlling the changes in their electronic absorption spectra. The interactions between the diazoamino group and the different groups account for some spectral shifts. The UV-vis spectrum of each compound...

Three of the factors limiting the rational use of herbal medicine are uncertainty on effectivity, uncertainty on safety and variation in quality of the product. Because many herbal medicines have been used over centuries by indigenous peoples, the safety and effectivity is frequently not such a big concern. With more people collecting and distributing herbal medicine, the offered product is how...
