Abrupt orientation to novel stimuli is a critical, memory-dependent task performed by the brain. In the present study, we examined two gaze control centers of the barn owl: the optic tectum (OT) and the arcopallium gaze fields (AGFs). Responses of neurons to long sequences of dichotic sound bursts comprised of two sounds differing in the probability of appearance were analyzed. We report that a...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the long-term efficacy of acoustically controlled auditory training in adults after tarumatic brain injury. METHODS A total of six audioogically normal individuals aged between 20 and 37 years were studied. They suffered severe traumatic brain injury with diffuse axional lesion and underwent an acoustically controlled auditory training program approximately one year b...

The present research was designed to assess auditory discrimination, attention, memory, and learning in paranoid schizophrenic patients using a dichotic listening procedure consisting of attending to a signal or a story channeled only to one ear. A sample of 24 paranoid schizophrenics and 24 normal controls volunteered. In Experiment 1, 12 schizophrenics and 12 controls attended to the signal w...

Auditory backward recognition masking refers to the ability of a masking sound to terminate further perceptual resolution of a test sound presented slightly earlier in time. The present experiments were conducted to determine whether mask/test tone similarity effects in backward recognition masking could be reliably demonstrated. Although similarity effects were found in Experiments 1 and 2, on...

Six stroke patients were studied using a dichotic listening CV task, 4 with left hemisphere infarction, 2 with right hemisphere infarction. It was observed a "lesion-effect", a shift of hemisphere prevalence to the side opposite a brain lesion. The authors suggest that the lesion-effect can be explained by the auditory extinction phenomenon at the linguistic level.

Identification of the cognitive mechanisms behind gait changes in aging is a prime endeavor gerontology and geriatrics. For this reason, we have implemented new dual-task paradigm where an auditory attentional task performed during over-ground walking. Dichotic listening assesses spontaneous attention voluntary directed to right left-ear. The uniqueness dichotic relies on its requirements that ...
