The cylindrical resonator gyroscope (CRG) is a typical Coriolis vibratory gyroscope whose performance is determined by the Q factor and frequency mismatch of the cylindrical resonator. Enhancing the Q factor is crucial for improving the rate sensitivity and noise performance of the CRG. In this paper, for the first time, a monolithic cylindrical fused silica resonator with a Q factor approachin...

Methods are developed to estimate the adhesion and surface free energies of compliant materials from the contact deformations of cylindrical lenses with flat sheets. Some important differences are found between the cylindrical contact studied here and the widely studied geometry of spherical contact. For example, while the pull-off force is completely independent of the elastic constants (K) of...

We present an analytical solution for the scattering of diffuse photon density waves from an infinite circular, cylindrical inhomogeneity embedded in a homogeneous highly scattering turbid medium. The analytical solution, based on the diffusion approximation of the Boltzmann transport equation, represents the contribution of the cylindrical inhomogeneity as a series of modified Bessel functions...

Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition (CAD) was initially introduced to tackle the classic problem of quantifier elimination over real closed algebraic fields, however it has since seen many applications in its own right. Given a set of polynomials, multiple algorithms exist to produce a CAD such that over each cell the polynomials have constant sign. Inherently doubly exponential in the number o...

much like spherical lenses do, but in only one dimension. This makes them useful for altering the proportions of an image, either singly or when used in pairs. They can transform a point image into a line image or change the height of an image without altering its width (or vice versa). Applications of this type include anamorphic beam shaping and correcting the elliptical output of a laser dio...

A fast current pulse causes a material to heat and undergo rapid expansion. We calculate the response of a cylindrically shaped material to a pulse on the microsecond time scale. The first step is to obtain the breathing modes of elastic oscillation of the cylinder. These modes are calculated using a Rayleigh–Ritz variational method introduced by Demarest for cubes. The boundary conditions are ...

We discuss gravitomagnetism in connection with rotating cylindrical systems. In particular, the gravitomagnetic clock effect is investigated for the exterior vacuum field of an infinite rotating cylinder. The dependence of the clock effect on the Weyl parameters of the stationary Lewis metric is determined. We illustrate our results by means of the van Stockum spacetime. PACS numbers: 04.20.Cv;...

We extend the theory of Talbot revivals for planar or rectangular geometry to the case of cylindrical waveguides. We derive a list of conditions that are necessary to obtain revivals in cylindrical waveguides. A phase space approach based on the Wigner and the Kirkwood-Rihaczek functions provides a pictorial representation of TM modes interference associated with the Talbot effect.

The elongated shape of linear, worm-like, micelles is among the most common aggregation geometries of amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions. The cylindrical body of these uni-dimensional micelles can be regarded as an intermediate packing geometry, of a higher growth dimensionality than that of a spherical micelle and lower than that of a planar bilayer. In all these three canonical struct...

We combine the classical point of view of special functions with functional calculus for sectorial operators to obtain semi-explicit representation formulæ for the solutions. The formulæ are well suited for the further study of their properties as well as for the precise characterization of asymptotic behaviour in the large or for vanishing parameters (such as in perturbation theory). The approa...
