To identify the host range of potential vectors of Dirofilaria immitis Leidy, the causal agent of canine dirofilariasis, we studied the bloodmeal origin of mosquitoes trapped on two of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, where this disease is considered hyperendemic. On Gran Canaria, mosquitoes were captured using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traps (outdoors) and ...
Background: Mosquito galactose-specific C-type lectins (mosGCTLs), such as mosGCTL-1, act ligands to facilitate the invasion of flaviviruses like West Nile virus (WNV). WNV interacts with mosGCTL-1 Aedes aegypti (Culicidae) and facilitates this virus. Nevertheless, there is no data about role a transmission-blocking vaccine candidate in Culex pipiens, most abundant Culicinae mosquito temperate ...
The susceptibility of 18 species of mosquitoes to the infective stage of the mermithid nematode Reesimermis nielseni was compared to that of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus. Thirteen species were more susceptible, with three Anopheles species and Culiseta inornata the most susceptible. Aedes triseriatus, Culex territans, and Psorophora ferox were highly resistant. Resistance to R. nielseni appea...
The bursicon gene in Anopheles gambiae is encoded by two loci. Burs124 on chromosome arm 2L contains exons 1, 2, and 4, while burs3 on arm 2R contains exon 3. Exon 3 is efficiently spliced into position in the mature transcript. This unusual gene arrangement is ancient within mosquitoes, being shared by Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens.
Understanding how human land use patterns influence mosquito ecology and the risk of mosquito-borne pathogens is critical for the development of disease management strategies. We examined how different environments influenced mosquito species composition, abundance, and West Nile virus (WNV) infection rates in central Illinois. Using a combination of gravid traps and CDC light traps, adult mosq...
The Bacillus laterosporus strains 921 and 615 were shown to have toxicity for larvae of the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi, and Culex pipiens. The larvicidal activity of B. laterosporus was associated with spores and crystalline inclusions. Purified B. laterosporus 615 crystals were highly toxic for Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi.
Larvae of Culex pipiens and Cx. restuans in catch basins were exposed to Altosid pellets (4% active ingredient, [S]-methoprene) applied at a rate of 11.3 kg/ha (7 g of pellets per catch basin). Under field conditions, the pellets yielded an average 82% emergence inhibition of adult mosquitoes over the 15-wk trial period.
Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes (Cx. p. pipiens and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus) are among the principal vectors of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus in the eastern United States; Cx. restuans and Cx. salinarius play secondary roles in the transmission and maintenance of the virus cycle. Accurate identification of these three species in field collections is required for epidemiologic studies of S...
West Nile (WN) virus transmission in the United States during 2000 was most intense on Staten Island, New York, where 10 neurologic illnesses among humans and 2 among horses occurred. WN virus was isolated from Aedes vexans, Culex pipiens, Cx. salinarius, Ochlerotatus triseriatus, and Psorophora ferox, and WN viral RNA was detected in Anopheles punctipennis. An elevated weekly minimum infection...
The taxonomy of the Culex pipiens complex remains a controversial issue in mosquito systematics. Based on morphologic characters, 2 allopatric taxa are recognized, namely Cx. pipiens (including the form "molestus") in temperate areas and Cx. quinquefasciatus in tropical areas. Here we report on variability at the nucleotide level of an acetylcholinesterase gene in several strains and natural po...
