We demonstrate a ring-shaped Bessel-like photonic lattice akin to a photonic bandgap fiber with a low-index core. While the ring lattice is optically induced in a bulk crystal with a self-defocusing nonlinearity, guidance of a probe beam propagating linearly through the core is clearly observed. The possible mechanism for such guidance is also discussed.

The phase diagram of a system of electrons hopping on a square lattice and interacting through long-range Coulomb forces is studied as a function of density and interaction strength. The presence of a lattice strongly enhances the stability of the Wigner crystal phase as compared to the case of the two-dimensional electron gas.

Under proper conditions, small particles may be suspended in a regularly-spaced array called a Coulomb crystal. In this paper we discuss the application of this phenomenon to the self-assembly of nanoparticles in a lattice-lie array on a substrate. Issues associated with depositing the particles, and the size and lattice spacing of the particles are discussed.

Gas hydrates are crystalline ice-like solid materials enclosing gas molecules inside. The possibility of the presence of gas hydrates with amino acids in the universe is of interest when revealing the potential existence of life as they are evidence of a source of water and organic precursors, respectively. However, little is known about how they can naturally coexist, and their crystallization...

This work provides a detailed study on the growth of AlxIn1-xAsySb1-y lattice-matched to InAs by Molecular Beam Epitaxy. In order to find the conditions which lead to high crystal quality deep within the miscibility gap, AlxIn1-xAsySb1-y with x = 0.462 was grown at different growth temperatures as well as As2 and Sb2 beam equivalent pressures. The crystal quality of the grown layers was examine...

We demonstrate fabrication of novel magnetically controllable photonic crystals formed through the self-assembly of highly charged, monodisperse superparamagnetic colloidal spheres. These superparamagnetic monodisperse charged polystyrene particles containing nanoscale iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized through emulsion polymerization. They self-assemble into crystalline colloidal arrays...

1. Guinea pig hemoglobin crystals are shown to be readily permeable to ferricyanide and hydrosulfite, indicating the presence of interstices between the protein molecules of the crystal. 2. The assumptions of closest hexagonal packing and of spherical molecules of HbO(2) lead to a crystal lattice having interstices between the molecules which represent 25 per cent by volume of the crystal. Thes...

Multi-reflection Bragg coherent diffraction imaging has the potential to allow three-dimensional (3D) resolved measurements of the full lattice strain tensor in specific micro-crystals. Until now such measurements were hampered by the need for laborious, time-intensive alignment procedures. Here a different approach is demonstrated, using micro-beam Laue X-ray diffraction to first determine the...

In this paper the dispersion property of index guided photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) of silica material has been investigated. The modal analysis is done to obtain the complex effective refractive index for: (i) Hexagonal lattice with circular air holes and first ring having elliptical cells (ii) Rectangular lattice with circular air holes and first ring having elliptical cells. The dispersion
