I present a model in which people develop certain traits (or skills) and also assign worth to those traits. The worth a person assigns to different traits are the person’s values. These values can be used to evaluate one’s own traits and the traits of others. I show that when people are incentivized to place more value on skills for which they are comparatively advantaged, people with lower opp...

This note provides simple tests for first-order bi-polarization orderings of distributions of living standards. In doing so, the paper also offers an ethical basis and an interpretation for the common use of some simple measures of distances from the median. Illustrations using Luxembourg Income Study data show that several countries can be ranked by such tests of bi-polarization

We investigate how to make poverty comparisons using multidimensional indicators of well-being, showing in particular how to check whether the comparisons are robust to aggregation procedures and to the choice of multidimensional poverty lines. In contrast to earlier work, our methodology applies equally well to what can be defined as “union”, “intersection” or “intermediate” approaches to deal...

This study examines the notion of generators of a pairwise comparisons matrix. Such approach decreases the number of pairwise comparisons from n · (n − 1) to n − 1. An algorithm of reconstructing of the PC matrix from its set of generators is presented.

In this paper we first compare Parikh’s condition to various pumping conditions Bar-Hillel’s pumping lemma, Ogden’s condition and Bader-Moura’s condition; secondly, to interchange condition; and finally, to Sokolowski’s and Grant’s conditions. In order to carry out these comparisons we present some properties of Parikh’s languages. The main result is the orthogonality of the previously mentione...

This paper shows the relevance of measurement theory for the linguistic analysis of comparative statements. In particular, the paper focusses on interadjective comparatives like ‘x is P -er than y is Q’ and comparatives involving multidimensional adjectives. It is argued that Bale’s (2008) recent proposal to account for such comparatives is rather limited, and just one way to account for intera...

SUMMARY gff2aplot is a program to visualize the alignment of two sequences together with their annotations. Input for the program consists of single or multiple files in GFF-format which specify the alignment coordinates and annotation features of both sequences. Output is in PostScript format of any size. The features to be displayed are highly customizable to meet user specific needs. The pro...

This paper deals with the problem of making general comparisons of well-being when wellbeing is measured in multiple dimensions. We note at the outset that much of the literature on the measurement of well-being incorporates multiple dimensional indicators of well-being by adding them up, such as when food and non-food expenditures are aggregated to compute total expenditures and assess monetar...

Network analysis needs tools to compare networks and assess the significance of differences between networks. We propose a principled statistical approach to network comparison that approximates networks as probability distributions on negatively curved manifolds. We outline the theory, as well as implement the approach on simulated networks, where its accuracy can be confirmed.
