In this paper, we consider a time-delayed periodic system which describes the competition among mature populations. By appealing to theories of monotone dynamical systems, periodic semiflows and uniform persistence, we analyze the evolutionary behavior of the system and establish sufficient conditions for competitive coexistence and exclusion.  2005 Elsevier Inc. It is a mainstay of community ecology that local exclusion of species will result if competitive pressures become too large. The pattern of exclusion may be complicated, but the qualitative orthodoxy has changed little since the pioneering work of Lotka, Volterra, and Gause--no two species can occupy the same niche. Stated in a more precise form, the higher the intensity of interspecific compet...

Lactic acid bacteria are known to exhibit probiotic properties through various mechanisms, including competitive exclusion, pathogen inhibition, production of antimicrobial substances, and maintenance of eubiosis. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of a novel probiotic strain, Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain NRRL B-442, which exhibits potent antivirulence activity against Salmonella ente...

Cubicle is a new model checker for verifying safety properties of parameterized systems. It implements a parallel symbolic backward reachability procedure using Satisfiabilty Modulo Theories. Experiments done on classic and challenging mutual exclusion algorithms and cache coherence protocols show that Cubicle is effective and competitive with state-of-the-art model checkers.

A vancomycin-resistant Lactococcus lactis isolate 1A-1 from a competitive exclusion (CE) product contained plasmid-encoded vanA, B, C1, and C2/3 genes. The L. lactis 1A-1 conjugatively transferred the genes to Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. CE product bacteria may be reservoirs for dissemination of vanA, B, and C genes to the human gastrointestinal microbiota.

The competitive interactions of genetically distinct isolates of Giardia duodenalis with different growth rates were studied in vitro. Electrophoretic analysis of mixed cultures showed that competition between 2 cloned isolates occurs under normal in vitro culture conditions, with faster-growing isolates outcompeting those with slower growth rates. The addition of sublethal concentrations of me...

In the present paper, we consider a mathematical model of two microbial species competing for two complementary nutrients with internal storage and different removal rates. The competitive exclusion, coexistence, and bi-stabilty are predicted in this model as those in the two-species Lotka-Volterra competition model.

We show the global stabilization of the chemostat with nonmonotonic growth, adding a new species as a "biological" control, in presence of different removal rates for each species. This result is obtained by an extension of the Competitive Exclusion Principle in the chemostat, for the case of two species with different removal rates and at least one nonmonotonic response.

This paper reviews the abundance and species richness, and factors that cause these parameters to vary, of mesofauna and macrofauna in an upland grassland soil studied intensively under the NERC Soil Biodiversity Programme. The concept that competitive exclusion does not act within soil communities is reviewed in light of these findings, which are placed in the context of the wider literature r...

Clonal selection is the keystone of mainstream immunology and computational systems based on immunological principles. For the latter, clonal selection is often interpreted as an asexual variant of natural selection, and thus, tend to be variations on evolutionary strategies. Retro-fitting immunological sophistication and theoretical rigour onto such systems has proved to be unwieldy. In this p...
