Orbitofrontal alteration in schizophrenia has not been well characterized, likely due to marked anatomical variability. To investigate the presence of such alterations, we evaluated the sulcogyral pattern of this 'H-shaped' sulcus. Fifty patients with schizophrenia (100 hemispheres) and 50 age- and gender-matched control subjects (100 hemispheres) were evaluated using 3D high-spatial resolution...

BACKGROUND Although systolic blood pressure (SBP) response to exercise has been shown to predict subsequent hypertension in small samples of men, this association has not been studied in a large population-based sample of middle-aged men and women. The purpose of this study was to examine, in normotensive subjects, the relations of SBP and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) during the exercise and ...

Discussions whether hypoalbuminemia is just a marker for the malnutrition-inflammation syndrome as well as for the increased morbidity and mortality of those patients or is it an etiological factor, are becoming more and more intense. In this research of the relation between hypoalbuminemia and the complications that threaten the vascular access with special reference to infection, and conseque...

BACKGROUND Research on the effects of treating sub-threshold depression in persons with diabetes is scarce in spite of the findings indicating that this condition is highly prevalent in the diabetic population and may increase the risk of developing a subsequent major depression. This study was aimed at exploring the effects of a psycho-educational intervention on depression- and diabetes-relat...

We address discrete nonlinear inverse problems with weighted least squares and Tikhonov regularization. Regularization is a way to add more information to the problem when it is ill-posed or ill-conditioned. However, it is still an open question as to how to weight this information. The discrepancy principle considers the residual norm to determine the regularization weight or parameter, while ...

In this paper we present a bottom-up discriminative algorithm to automatically learn Markov Logic Network structures. Our approach relies on a new propositionalization method that transforms the learning dataset into an approximative representation in the form of a boolean table. Using this table, the algorithm constructs a set of candidate clauses according to a χ independence test. To compute...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The rationale behind early aneurysm surgery in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is the prevention of rebleeding as early as possible after SAH. In addition, by clipping the aneurysm as early as possible, one can apply treatment for cerebral ischemia more vigorously (induced hypertension) without the risk of rebleeding. Hypervolemic hemodilution is now a well-ac...

We compared passive surveillance and International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, codes for completeness of staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) surveillance in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Minnesota, USA. TSS-specific codes identified 55% of cases compared with 30% by passive surveillance and were more sensitive (p = 0.0005, McNemar chi2 12.25).
