An important part of fundamental research in catalysis is based on theoretical and modeling foundations which are closely connected with studies of single-crystalline catalyst surfaces. These so-called model catalysts are often prepared in the form of epitaxial thin films, and characterized using advanced material characterization techniques. This concept provides the fundamental understanding ...
Cu-based, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes were modified by electrodeposition of Co. The addition of only 5-vol% Co by electrodeposition significantly improved the thermal stability compared to either Cu-ceriaYSZ, Cu-Co-ceria-YSZ, or Co-ceria-YSZ electrodes prepared only by impregnation with much higher metal loadings, demonstrating that electrodeposited metal layers form metal films wit...
Catalytic systems based on supported noble metals are extensively studied because of their widespread application. Discussions remain about the nature active species, whether they atomically dispersed or nanoparticles, and reactivity. In this work, combining in situ/operando spectroscopy with theoretical modeling, we propose a phase diagram platinum ceria, demonstrating that it reversibly chang...
Nano-sized particles of ceria with high surface area were processed by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) and their catalytic activity towards combustion of carbonaceous materials was compared with that obtained by simple thermal decomposition of cerium nitrate, exhibiting the same specific surface area. These two kinds of ceria powders were tested, by DTA and temperature programmed combustion...
The objective was to characterize the biodistribution of nanoscale ceria from blood and its effects on oxidative stress endpoints. A commercial 5% crystalline ceria dispersion in water (average particle size 3194 nm) was infused intravenously into rats (0, 50, 250 and 750 mg/kg), which were terminated 1 or 20 h later. Biodistribution in rat tissues was assessed by microscopy and ICP-AES/MS. Oxi...
Ceria and nickel-doped ceria necklace-like nanowires were synthesized by a facile, surfactant free method, through an unconventional assembly route. Homogeneous doping of lower-valent cations introduces elastic strain, resulting in extrinsic surface defects and higher catalytic performance in CO oxidization.
In this work, we present a modified simultaneous growth and self-aggregation method that produces ceria silver Janus nanoparticles for the conversion of 4-nitrophenol, chemical widely used in several industries. The had cerium-to-silver ratios ranging from 0 to 1.35 well-defined heterodimer morphologies. By controlling conditions, have manipulated interface between silver, maximizing its exposu...
Some major drawbacks encountered in the synthesis of copper-ceria (Cu-CeO2)-based Water Gas Shift (WGS) catalyst via conventional Impregnation (IMP) method are aggregate formation and nanoparticles’ instability. These lead to poor interaction between Copper Ceria, thereby impeding catalytic activity with inefficient utilization active sites. To overcome these drawbacks, this study, we described...

A mechanism of CO oxidation by a thin surface oxide of Rh supported on ceria is proposed: CO is oxidized by the Rh-oxide film, which is subsequently reoxidized by a ceria surface O atom. The proposed mechanism is supported by in situ Raman spectroscopic investigations.
