OBJECTIVES Poor solubility and toxicity severely hinder the clinical use of amphotericin B (AmB), in spite of its attractive chemotherapeutic properties. Water-soluble complexes of AmB and polyvinylpyrrolidone (AmB-PVP) could display lower cytotoxicity while maintaining antifungal activity. METHODS AmB-PVP [with PVP of 10, 24 and 40 kDa (AC1, AC2 and AC4)] were compared with free AmB for (i) ...

Candidasp pcan be either commensals or opportunistic pathogens. Pathogenic fungi in the genus Candida are capable of causing a variety of infections ranging from superficial to deep-seated mycoses. The Candida spp have been recognized as the fourth International Journal of Current Microbiology and Applied Sciences ISSN: 2319-7706 Volume 6 Number 9 (2017) pp. 3423-3430 Journal homepage: http://w...

Oral yeast carriage was studied in 312 Mexican subjects. Candida albicans was the most frequent species, but other Candida spp. were isolated from 16.5 to 38.5% of patients. Colonization did not correlate with CD4+ number or viral load, but highly active antiretroviral therapy reduced the frequency of candidiasis. Most isolates were susceptible to fluconazole, but 10.8% were resistant to one or...

Candida spp. especially Candida albicans is considered as one of the most common cause of fungal infections. The aim of our study was to determine epidemiology of candiduria in children who were referred to an Iranian referral hospital. During May 2011 to February 2013, among 4813 urine culture positive, 209 candida spp. isolates (4.3%) was found. Forty-one percent of cadiduria infection was se...

BACKGROUND Diseases produced for Candida species (spp) are called candidiasis and this includes settling, superficial infection, deep tissue invasion and haematogenic dissemination (eyes, the skin, the kidneys and the brain). The species that more usually cause candidiasis are C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata. These species usually are found in the normal microbial populations of the ...

Genotypes of Candida spp. isolated from exhalation of 20 dolphins, 11 water samples from captive pools, and 24 oral cavities of staff members in an aquarium using a combination of multiple drug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 5.8s-ITS 2 regions of ribosomal RNA gene (ITS rDNA) sequences were studied. The holding ratios of the dolphins, captive pools, and sta...

The in vitro activity of itraconazole was determined against 7,299 isolates of Candida spp., 1,615 isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans, and 445 isolates of Aspergillus spp. obtained from over 200 medical centers worldwide. Itraconazole was active against all Candida spp. (96% of MICs were < or =1 microg/ml) with the exception of C. glabrata (77% of MICs were < or =1 microg/ml). Itraconazole inh...

Effects of voriconazole combined with micafungin against 101 isolates of Candida spp. and 100 isolates of filamentous fungi have been evaluated by in vitro checkerboard analysis. The combination was indifferent for 97% of the Candida isolates and synergistic for 64% of the filamentous fungi (79% for Aspergillus fumigatus).

Cerebral abscess caused by Candida spp. is a rare disease, with a nonspecific presentation, little data on treatment, and generally poor outcomes. We present a case of this type of Candida infection in a 57-year-old man with a history of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and intravenous drug abuse, and review the literature on this disease. Our patient had a good treatment outcome with liposomal a...

OBJECTIVES Although inadequate antimicrobial therapy has been demonstrated in multiple studies to increase the risk for death in bacterial infections, few data investigating the effect of antifungal therapy on outcome of serious fungal disease are available. We sought to assess the adequacy of empirical therapy and its effect on mortality in invasive Candida species infections. METHODS Popula...
