This study explored the effect of deltamethrin, a pesticide, on intracellular free Ca²⁺ concentration ([Ca²⁺]i) in PC3 human prostate cancer cells. Deltamethrin at concentrations between 5 μM and 20 μM evoked [Ca²⁺]i rises in a concentration-dependent manner. This Ca²⁺ signal was inhibited by 22% by removal of extracellular Ca²⁺. Nifedipine, econazole, and SKF96365 also inhibited the Ca²⁺ signa...

Arsenic is widely spread in our living environment and imposes a big challenge on human health worldwide. Arsenic damages biological systems through multiple mechanisms including the generation of reactive oxygen species. The transcription factor Nrf2 regulates the cellular antioxidant response that protects cells from various insults. In this study, the protective role of Nrf2 in arsenic toxic...

The effect of the antifungal drug miconazole on Ca²⁺ signaling in human breast cancer cells is unknown. This study examined the effect of miconazole on cytosolic free Ca²⁺ concentrations ([Ca²⁺]i) in ZR-75-1 human breast cancer cells. The Ca²⁺-sensitive fluorescent dye fura-2 was used to measure [Ca²⁺]i. Miconazole induced [Ca²⁺]i rises concentration-dependently. The response was reduced by 60%...

The protective adaptive response to electrophiles and reactive oxygen species is mediated by enhanced expression of phase II detoxifying genes, including glutathione S-transferases, through activation of antioxidant response element (ARE). The current study was designed to investigate the role of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase)-Akt and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling...

3-tert-Butylhydroxyanisole (3-BHA) is an antioxidant which can have a modulating effect on chemical carcinogenesis. Information concerning the metabolism of 3-BHA is incomplete. In the present study, the metabolites formed by incubating 3-BHA with liver microsomes from rats given beta-naphthoflavone by p.o. intubation were studied. Three metabolites were identified, two major metabolites and a ...

A series of alkyl organoaluminium complexes based on bulky heteroscorpionate ligands were designed as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of cyclic esters. Thus, the treatment of AlX3 (X = Me, Et) with bulky acetamide or thioacetamide heteroscorpionate ligands nbptamH (1) [nbptamH = N-naphthyl-2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)thioacetamide], fbpamH (2) [fbpamH = N-fluorenyl-2,2-bis(3,...

Genome-wide association studies have provided evidence that common variation at 5p15.33 (TERT-CLPTM1L), 6p21.33 and 15q25.1 (CHRNA5-CHRNA3) influences lung cancer risk. To examine if variation at any of these loci influences the risk of lung cancer in never-smokers, we compared 5p15.33-TERT (rs2736100), 5p15.33-CLPTM1L (rs4975616), 6p21.33-BAT3 (rs3117582), 15q25.1-CHRNA3 (rs8042374) and 15q25....

The title compound, C(40)H(56)Cl(2)Si(4), was synthesized by the coupling of 1,1-di-tert-butyl-1,2-dichloro-2,2-diphenyl-disilane with lithium. The asymmetric unit contains one half-mol-ecule, which is completed by an inversion centre. In the mol-ecule, the tetra-silane skeleton adopts a perfect anti conformation and the Si-Si bonds [2.4355 (5) and 2.4328 (7) Å] are longer than the standard Si-...

Owing to the tendency of essential fatty acids (EFAs) to undergo autoxidation, their storage becomes a key problem. Generally, they are stabilized by synthetic antioxidants like TBHQ that are toxic in nature. Recently many studies were reported where these EFAs are stabilized by natural antioxidants. In the present study, curcuminoids and kalonji seeds ethanol extract (KEE) were used to stabili...
