This section looks back to some ground-breaking contributions to public health, reproducing them in their original form and adding a commentary on their significance from a modern-day perspective. Olivier Fontaine and Charlotte Newton review the 1973 paper by D. Mahalanabis et al. on the use of oral fluid therapy in the treatment of cholera. The original paper is reproduced by permission of The...
This section looks back to some ground-breaking contributions to public health, reproducing them in their original form and adding a commentary on their significance from a modern-day perspective. To complement the theme of this month’s Bulletin, Thomas C. Quinn reviews the paper he co-authored in 1986 on AIDS in Africa. The original paper is reproduced by permission of the American Association...
© World Health Organization 1999 This section looks back to some of the ground-breaking public health papers of the twentieth century, reproducing them in their original form and adding a commentary on their significance from a modern-day perspective. This month, Alan Lopez reviews the importance of Doll & Hill’s 1950 paper on the potential link between smoking and lung cancer. The original pap...

To complement this month’s theme of the Bulletin, Mercedes de Onis reviews the 1956 paper by F. Gomez et al. on mortality in second and third degree malnutrition. The original paper is reproduced by p...
This section looks back to some ground-breaking contributions to public health, reproducing them in their original form and adding a commentary on their significance from a modern-day perspective. To complement the theme of this month’s Bulletin, Ulrich C. Schaller and Volker Klauss review the 1881 paper by Carl S.F. Credé on the use of silver nitrate for the treatment of neonatal inflammatory ...
In this letter we present a predictive SO(10) SUSY GUT with flavor symmetry U(2)×U(1) which has several nice features. We are able to fit fermion masses and mixing angles, including recent neutrino data, with 9 parameters in the charged fermion sector and 4 in the neutrino sector. The flavor symmetry plays a preeminent role – (i) The model is “natural” – we include all terms allowed by the symm...
After briefly reviewing the gauge symmetry in Moyal spacetimes, we analyse aspects of symmetry breaking within a quantisation program preserving the twisted Poincaré symmetry. We develop the LSZ approach for Moyal spacetimes and derive a mapping for scattering amplitudes on these spacetimes from the corresponding ones on the commutative spacetime. This map applies in the presence of spontaneous...
Prospects for SO(10) as a minimal grand unification group have recently been heightened by several considerations such as the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, baryogenesis, possibility for understanding fermion masses etc. I review the present status of the minimal SO(10) models with special emphasis on the predictions for proton lifetime and predictions for neutrino masses for the ...
