The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strain BB12 in stimulated Caco-2 cells and to characterize the factors responsible for these anti-inflammatory effects. Characterization and purification studies indicate that BB12's anti-inflammatory factors might include a 50-kDa proteinaceous compound that is stable unde...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and side effects of Bifidobacterium tetragenous viable bacteria tablets in treating cancer patients with functional constipation during chemotherapy. METHODS A consecutive cohort of 100 cancer patients with functional constipation were divided into two equal groups: patients in the experimental group were given Bifidobacterium tetragenous viable bacteria ...

The anti-infectious activity of probiotic Bifidobacteria against Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 was examined in a fatal mouse STEC infection model. Stable colonization of the murine intestines was achieved by the oral administration of Bifidobacterium breve strain Yakult (naturally resistant to streptomycin sulfate) as long as the mice were treated with streptomycin in th...

Gut microbiota is a determining factor in human physiological functions and health. It is commonly accepted that diet has a major influence on the gut microbial community, however, the effects of diet is not fully understood. The typical Mongolian diet is characterized by high and frequent consumption of fermented dairy products and red meat, and low level of carbohydrates. In this study, the g...

Wronkowska M., Soral-Śmietana M. (2012): Fermentation of native wheat, potato, and pea starches, and their preparations by Bifidobacterium – changes in resistant starch content. Czech J. Food Sci., 30: 9–14. The capability was studied of the selected Bifidobacterium strains to utilise the resistant starch fraction (RS) from native starches of the following origin: wheat, potato, and pea, and th...

The susceptibility pattern of 459 strains of bifidobacteria, representing 15 species, to 16 antimicrobial agents was determined by the broth dilution method. The majority of the strains derived from human faeces. Penicillin G, erythromycin, clindamycin, vancomycin and bacitracin were the most active compounds; they inhibited 90% of the strains at less than 1.6 micrograms/ml. All strains were su...

We report here the draft genome sequences of Bifidobacterium strains N4G05 and N5G01, isolated from the human vaginal microbiome. Genome sequences were obtained by de novo assembly from high-quality reads. Both strains were closely related to Bifidobacterium kashiwanohense based on barcode marker sequences and average nucleotide identity analysis.

Introduction Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), considered the leading cause of chronic liver disease in children, can often progress from non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). It is clear that obesity is one of the main risk factors involved in NAFLD pathogenesis, even if specific mechanisms have yet to be elucidated. We investigated the distribution...

BACKGROUND Cell surface pili in Gram positive bacteria have been reported to orchestrate the colonization of host tissues, evasion of immunity and the development of biofilms. So far, little if any information is available on the presence of pilus-like structures in human gut commensals like bifidobacteria. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In this report, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) of various bifido...
