The investigation of cutcumber softening can be traced back to the turn of the centuiry when Aderhold (1899) described a sporeforming organism, which he called Bacterium coli, as the cauise of this spoilage. Kossowicz (1908), however, implicated the genus Bacillus and further work by Rahn (1913), LeFevre (1919), and Joslyn (1929) confirmed and extended this theory. Fabian and Johnson (1938) con...

In microbial communities, bacteria chemically and physically interact with one another. Some of these interactions are mediated by secreted specialized metabolites that act as either intraspecies or interspecies signals to alter gene expression and to change cell physiology. Bacillus subtilis is a well-characterized soil microbe that can differentiate into multiple cell types, including metabol...

In this research, antagonistic activity of two Bacillus species isolated from digestive tract of marine fish and culture pond of sea cucumber was studied. The inhibitory activity of Bacillus spp. isolates against some common pathogenic bacteria of fish was assessed using the agar diffusion method. The strain of B. subtilis G024 exhibited antimicrobial activity against Vibrio anguillarum, V. har...

Background & Objectives: Cryptosporidium parvum is considered as one of the pathogenic agents transmitted by water, high resistance to conventional disinfection methods, and potency of creating various problems in water resource. Because of various problems in Cryptosporidium parvum studies, Bacillus subtilis spore is recommended as a surrogate organism for studying protozoa inactivation and ev...

Quantitative mass conversion of intact bacterial cells of Bacillus subtilis and B. licheniformis to L-phase variants has been effected after lysozyme treatment. After subculture of the unstable L-phase variants for several months in the presence of methicillin, stable L-phase variants were obtained which grew in the absence of the antibiotic and were then unable to revert to the classical bacte...

Iron deprivation in bacteria causes the derepression of genes controlled by the ferric uptake regulator (Fur). The present microarray analysis of iron-starved Bacillus subtilis cells grown in minimal medium unveils additional physiological effects on a large number of genes linked to stringent-response regulation and to genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis associated with pathways essentia...

A mutant of Bacillus subtilis was isolated that was resistant to the growth inhibitory activity of the synergistic antibiotics of the PA 114, streptogramin, and vernamycin complexes. Escherichia coli is naturally resistant to the action of these antibiotics. In both cases, it was shown that resistance was due to an inability of the bacteria to transport the antibiotics into the cell.
