Introduction: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infectious diseases, and Escherichia coli is known as the most dominant causative agent of this infection in 90-80% of patients. There is not much information about the phylogenetic groups, types, and virulence factors of E. coli, causing UTIs from Iran. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibi...

Ear infection linked with frequent antibiotic prescription, hearing impairment, severe disability and death is a public health threat in developing countries. However, there is scarcity of documented data in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed at determining bacterial etiologic agents and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among patients of all age groups referred to Bahir Dar ...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important opportunistic bacteria, causing a wide variety of infections particularly in immunocompromised patients. The extracellular glycocalyx is produced in copious amounts by mucoid strains of P. aeruginosa. Mucoid and non-mucoid P. aeruginosa strains show some differences in their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. The aim of this study was to in...

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 112 clinical isolates, 28 type strains, and 9 reference strains of Nocardia were determined using the Sensititre Rapmyco microdilution panel (Thermo Fisher, Inc.). Isolates were identified by highly discriminatory multilocus sequence analysis and were chosen to represent the diversity of species recovered from clinical specimens in Ontario, Canada. Susce...

Patterns of susceptibility of 45 Proteus penneri clinical isolates to 14 antimicrobial agents were evaluated by a macrobroth dilution method. All strains were highly susceptible to ceftizoxime, ceftazidime, moxalactam, cefoxitin, gentamicin, tobramycin, netilmicin, and, with few exceptions, to amikacin, piperacillin, and cefoperazone. Most strains were susceptible to cefotaxime and ceftriaxone....

INTRODUCTION When bacterial pericarditis is suspected, urgent pericardial drainage combined with intravenous antibacterial therapy is mandatory to avert devastating, life-threatening complications. There have been scanty results on antimicrobial susceptibility of common causative microorganisms of bacterial pericarditis; most studies had small sample sizes and were performed decades ago. METH...

BACKGROUND Intra-abdominal infections are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The most frequent pathogens involved are the gastrointestinal flora which can cause poly-microbial infections. Microbiological diagnosis is required to determine the aetiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of the organisms involved. Prompt initiation of antimicrobials is essential for improving pat...

BACKGROUND Bacterial diarrhoeal disease is among the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in children 0-59 months at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. However, most cases are treated empirically without the knowledge of aetiological agents or antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. The aim of this study was, therefore, to identify bacterial causes of diarrhoea and dete...

We summarize antimicrobial drug resistance (AMR) patterns from blood cultures at a tertiary hospital in Uganda. High rates of resistance to first-line antibiotic drugs were observed among Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative organisms. Microbiology services with susceptibility testing should be strengthened to support standardized reporting of AMR data in sub-Saharan Africa.

European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2017 (22-25 April, Vienna, Austria). Collaborative studies between hospitals in Europe and across the USA provided new insights into assessing susceptibility patterns and optimizing antimicrobial therapy in patients with infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, including carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) and P...
