Sporozoites of Plasmodium falciparum are transmitted to human hosts by Anopheles mosquitoes. Thrombospondin-related adhesive protein (TRAP) is expressed in sporozoites and plays a crucial role in sporozoite gliding and invasion of human hepatocytes. A previous study showed that the TRAP gene has been subjected to balancing selection in the Gambian P. falciparum population. To further study the ...

introduction: the telomeric dna together with its associated proteins protects the chromosome ends from degradation or aberrant recombination. telomerase and telomere are closely associated with development of cancers. in this study we aim to investigate the significance of telomerase activity (ta) and telomere length (tl) in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (apl). methods: peripher...
BACKGROUND Osteoclasts secrete tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP; EC 3.1.3.2) 5b into the circulation. We studied the release of TRAP 5b from osteoclasts using a mouse in vitro osteoclast differentiation assay. METHODS We developed and characterized a polyclonal antiserum in rabbits, using purified human osteoclastic TRAP 5b as antigen. The antiserum was specific for TRAP in Western a...
We show that an atomic system in a periodically modulated optical trap displays an ideal mean-field symmetry-breaking transition. The symmetry is broken with respect to time translation by the modulation period. We describe experimental observations and develop a full microscopic theory of the observed critical phenomena. The transition is explained as resulting from the interplay of the long-r...
We present a holographic optical tweezers system capable of position clamping multiple particles. Moving an optical trap in response to the trapped object's motion is a powerful technique for optical control and force measurement. We have now realised this experimentally using a Boulder Nonlinear Systems Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) with a refresh rate of 203Hz. We obtain a reduction of 44% in...
We study the phase behavior of two-dimensional paramagnetic colloidal systems on square pinning arrays, the latter being created by a holographic optical tweezer technique. When the particle interaction strength is decreased, a transition from an incommensurate to a commensurate solid is observed. At even smaller pair potentials, the interstitial particles start to melt, whereas the particles a...
Particles moving on crystalline surfaces and driven by external forces or flow fields can acquire velocities along directions that deviate from that of the external force. This effect depends upon the characteristics of the particles, most notably particle size or particle index of refraction, and can therefore be (and has been) used to sort different particles. We introduce a simple model for ...
The ability to rectify Brownian forces with spatially extended time-varying light fields creates new opportunities for studying the statistical properties of thermal ratchet models and to exploit these models' interesting and useful properties for practical applications. This paper describes experimental studies of one-dimensional thermal ratchets implemented with the holographic optical trappi...
We report on an experimental method to align a laser beam to a cloud of atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). We show how balanced lock-in detection leads to a very sensitive method to align the laser beam to the atoms in the plane perpendicular to the propagation direction. This provides a very reliable and fast way of aligning laser beams to atoms trapped in a MOT.
