Peroxidatic activation of the anti-tuberculosis pro-drug isoniazid by Mycobacterium tuberculosis catalase-peroxidase (KatG) is regulated by gating residues of a heme access channel. The steric restriction at the bottleneck of this channel is alleviated by replacement of residue Asp137 with Ser, according to crystallographic and kinetic studies.

In a retrospective study, five patients are reported who suffered from a Mycobacterium leprae/HIV co-infection and were treated for their HIV infection with HAART. In four patients, this revealed their leprosy and induced a type I leprosy reaction. Two patients who were lepromin negative at diagnosis were retested after about 1 year of anti-retroviral treatment, and found to be positive.

BACKGROUND The unique cell wall of bacteria of the suborder Corynebacterineae is essential for the growth and survival of significant human pathogens including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae. Drug resistance in mycobacteria is an increasingly common development, making identification of new antimicrobials a priority. Recent studies have revealed potent anti-mycobacterial co...

We report a case of recurrent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (DMAC) disease with anti-gamma interferon autoantibodies. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case caused by reinfection with a separate isolate of M. avium. DMAC disease activity was monitored using serum IgG antibody titers against lipid antigens extracted from a MAC strain.

We report the case of a 23-year-old asthmatic woman who had clinical and radiological deterioration due to Mycobacterium szulgai infection and good response to anti-mycobacterial treatment without any structural abnormalities in previous lung imaging studies. M. szulgai may be considered a pathogen able to cause deterioration of respiratory health even in patients with previously normal lungs.

Nine pyrrole-containing compounds were designed introducing reasonable structural novelties within the framework of the architecture of confirmed tuberculostatics. The new products were synthesized via adopted Paal-Knorr cyclization by condensation of three 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds with a set of substituted anilines, acting as primary amines. Preliminary in vitro tests have already registered e...

The case of a 60 year old male patient, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis presenting with recurrent massive pericardial effusion, and unresponsive to treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is documented. Pericardial biopsy proved Tuberculous pericarditis with positive fluid culture for Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Anti-tuberculous treatment was started along with corticosteroids. Follow up after th...

We report two cases of Addison's disease occurring in association with proven Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Both were treated with modern chemotherapeutic agents and were shown to have developed normal adrenal cortical function after several years. We suggest that adrenal function should be tested after modern anti-tuberculous therapy of this disease.

Introduction: Development of effective immunodiagnostic methods for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is crucial. Serodiagnostic methods, based on antibody response to specific antigens could provide promising approaches for rapid, economical and easy to perform diagnostic tests which are crucial for tuberculosis (TB) control. In this study, the level of IgG antibody responses...

A series of 1,2,3-trisubstituted indolizines (2a–2f, 3a–3d, and 4a–4c) were screened for in vitro whole-cell anti-tubercular activity against the susceptible H37Rv multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) strains. Compounds 2b–2d, 4a–4c active H37Rv-MTB strain with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 4 to 32 µg/mL, whereas 4a–4c, ethyl ester group at 4-position...
