Surgery of temporomandibular joint ankylosis under general anesthesia poses a great challenge to anesthesiologists. This surgery falls in the category of difficult intubation as direct vocal cord visualization is difficult due to an inability to open the mouth. The present case report suggests that the fiberoptic intubation has become an essential skill for anesthetists dealing with patients in...
The article gives an overview of the historical development of stapedectomy beginning with Kessel in 1876. Then, from the beginning to the middle of the 20th century, surgery on the oval window became obsolete, opening the way for an era of fenestration operations until Shea in 1956 performed the first modern stapedectomy using a Teflon stapes replacement prosthesis. We performed arthrodesis of the ankle in eight patients by arthroscopic joint excision and fixation with crossed tibiotalar compression screws. Two patients had rheumatoid arthritis and six had post-traumatic osteoarthritis. None had a serious deformity of the ankle. Clinical ankylosis was achieved in all cases and there was radiological evidence of bone fusion in four.
Lesions of the costovertebral (CV) and costotransverse (CT) joints are distinctly unusual in rheumatoid arthritis. The patient presented had dramatic changes in these joints with destruction, ankylosis, and bony overgrowth. This led to a moderate respiratory impairment and a distinctive radiological presentation.
Rigidity of the thorax in ankylosing spondylitis was first recognized as long ago as 1695, when Bernard Connor described a skeleton showing the characteristic rigidity of the thoracic cage and lumbar spine and concluded that respiration must have been greatly restricted during the life of the unfortunate sufferer. This astute observation remained the only one of its kind until Hilton Fagge (187...
This is a case report of the presentation and the management of an apicomarginal defect which was associated with a root end fracture in an endodontically treated tooth. In spite of a successful Root Canal Treatment (RCT), if the fractured root end is left intact, considering inadverdent ankylosis or resorption, it may progress to the development of a bony dehiscence.
We present a 25-year-old patient with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosis of both hips and both knees treated by staged bilateral hip and knee arthroplasty. She was followed up for 18 months. We discuss the pre-operative planning, surgical details and post-operative rehabilitation.
