abstract       background and objective: probiotics are living microorganisms that have beneficial effects on the health of digestive system. the aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial ability of acidic and neutral supernatants (culture supernatant) of lactic acid bacteria against common bacterial pathogens.        methods: four species of lactic acid bacteria (lactobacillus planta...

Although reliable detection of resistance in vitro is critical to the overall performance of any susceptibility testing method, the recently released National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards M27-A methodology for susceptibility testing of yeasts discriminates poorly between resistant and susceptible isolates of Candida spp. We have previously shown that both substitution of antibiot...

Due to the increase in multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, the interest in older antimicrobial agents, like fosfomycin, has increased. In this study, we used agar dilution for testing susceptibilities to fosfomycin in a collection of 107 carbapenem-nonsusceptible Enterobacteriaceae isolates, of which 80 produced various types of carbapenemases, including KPC, VIM, NDM, and OXA-48. Overall, ...

The agar-gel precipitin-inhibition technique has been modified to detect antibodies of Histoplasma capsulatum in sera from human clinical cases and experimental animals infected with this organism. By use of this modified technique, the histoplasmosis can be detected more consistently and reliably than with the direct agar-gel diffusion test, and titers are comparable to those attained by the c...

Mannitol salt agar was evaluated for detection of oxacillin resistance in 136 Staphylococcus aureus isolates. All mecA-positive isolates (n = 54) were correctly categorized as oxacillin resistant by the disk diffusion test (1-microgram disk; zone diameter, < 16 mm); the specificity was 97.6%. Agar screening (2 micrograms of oxacillin per ml) revealed a sensitivity of 98.1% and a specificity of ...

The correlation and the level of agreement between the standardized agar dilution and the agar disk diffusion methods for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Campylobacter were investigated. A high-level agreement between the two methods was evident for aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones, while a low-level agreement was observed for other antibiotics.

Currently, no agar-based susceptibility testing method has been standardized for testing dermatophytes. We describe a newly developed agar-based method employing disk diffusion assay to test the susceptibility of 47 isolates of dermatophytes against 8 antifungals. Our results show that the method is reproducible, is simple, and could be used to determine the antifungal susceptibility of dermato...
