Treatment of uroepithelial cells with lipoteichoic acid from Staphylococcus saprophyticus resulted in a decrease in the adherence of this organism. Similar effects were observed when bacteria were pretreated with the lipoteichoic acid ligands albumin and anti-polyglycerophosphate monoclonal antibodies. Lipoteichoic acid might behave as an adhesin of S. saprophyticus.

A real-time PCR for detection and quantification of M. ovipneumoniae was developed using 9 recently sequenced M. ovipneumoniae genomes and primers targeting a putative adhesin gene p113. The assay proved to be specific and sensitive (with a detection limit of 22 genomic DNA) and could quantify M. ovipneumoniae DNA over a wide linear range, from 2.2 × 10(2) to 2.2 × 10(7) genomes.

The characterization of nine atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains expressing localized adherence in HeLa cells in the absence of the bundle-forming pilus revealed a diversity of serotypes, plasmids, and virulence genes. Although the strains lacked known E. coli adhesin genes, the identification of new adhesins could contribute to the characterization of similar enteropathogenic E....

The vaccination of C3H/HeJ mice with Escherichia coli Dr fimbrial antigen reduced mortality associated with an experimental urinary tract infection due to a homologous strain bearing Dr adhesin. Immune sera with high titers of anti-Dr antibody inhibited bacterial binding to bladders and kidneys but did not affect the rate of renal colonization.

Four of six adhesin-encoding genes (lpfA, paa, iha, and toxB) from Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were detected in typical and atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains of various serotypes. Although the most prevalent gene was lpfA in both groups, paa was the only potential diarrhea-associated gene in atypical EPEC.

The P97 adhesin and P102 genes of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae each have six paralogs in the genome. We tested whether these genes were expressed during infection. P102 is associated with the mycoplasma and with swine cilia. Further, most of the paralogs were transcribed in vivo in two gene transcriptional units.

In this issue, Kamhawi et al. (2004) describe the identification of an insect galectin as the receptor for the stage-specific Leishmania adhesin lipophosphoglycan (LPG). This interaction is critical for parasite survival in the midgut of its sand fly vector. The results open new avenues for studies of insect immunity, transmission binding vaccines, and host-parasite coevolution.
