The risk factors for and presentation of Candida tropicalis fungemia, in comparison with those of Candida albicans, have been incompletely characterized. We compared 43 cases of C. tropicalis fungemia with 148 cases of C. albicans fungemia. In univariate analysis, patients with C. tropicalis fungemia were more likely to have leukemia (P=.0006), prolonged neutropenia (P=.03), and a positive bloo...

BACKGROUND Functional status (FS) before intensive care unit (ICU) admission is associated with short-term and long-term outcomes among critically ill patients. However, measures of FS are generally not integrated into ICU-specific mortality prediction models. METHODS This retrospective cohort study used prospectively collected data from 9638 consecutive patients admitted to a single ICU betw...

STUDY OBJECTIVE To validate the APACHE (acute physiology and chronic health evaluation) III unadjusted and similar hospital mortality estimate models on 30-day mortality, and to propose a simple approach to modeling local 30-day in-hospital mortality of critically ill hospitalized adults for quality management and risk-adjusted monitoring. DESIGN Noninterventional, observational study. PATI...

Results 343 patients were included, 158 (46.1%) with secondary and 185 (53.9%) with tertiary peritonitis. 64.4% were male, age was 63.7 ± 14.3 years and APACHE was 19.4 ± 7.8. In-hospital mortality was 37%. We showed a higher incidence of Candida spp. (Odds Ratio(OR):1.275;95% Confidence Interval(CI):1.096-1.789;P=0.016), Enterococcus faecium (OR:1.085;95% CI:1.018-1.400;P=0.002) and Enterococc...

BACKGROUND The occurrence of highly resistant microorganisms (HRMOs) is a major threat to critical care patients, leading to worse outcomes, need for isolation measures, and demand for second-line or rescue antibiotics. The aim of this study was to quantify the burden of HRMOs in an intensive care unit (ICU) for adult patients in a university hospital in the Netherlands. We evaluated local dist...
