The reaction of Zn(NO(3))(2) with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (pydcH(2)) and acridine (acr) in aqueous solution leads to the formation of the title compound, (C(13)H(10)N)[Zn(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(C(7)H(4)NO(4))]·5H(2)O or (acrH)[Zn(pydcH)(pydc)]·5H(2)O. In the title compound, the Zn(II) atom is coordinated by four O atoms and two N atoms from the tridentate chelating rings of (pydc)(2-) and (pydcH...

Green-fluorescent intracellular enteropathogenic bacteria were observed after infected HeLa cell monolayers were stained with acridine orange and counterstained with crystal violet at least 3 h after infection.

We have developed a quick, simple technique for the fluorescent staining of bacterial endospores. This technique was developed using Bacillus subtilis endospores. Our technique requires minimal sample heating so it can safely be carried out entirely in a glove-box. The endospores stain diagnostically as an oval with a standard fluorescent nucleotide stain, acridine orange.

Characteristics are described of small-colony variants of Xanthomonas campestris NRRL B-1459 which are frequently encountered when routine culture maintenance procedures are employed. In contrast to the parental type, smallcolony variants were shown to be resistant to a number of antibiotics, to acridine orange, and to phage which are virulent for the parent colony type. Sensitivity to ultravio...

The discovery of antimalarial properties ni Plasmochin and acridine derivatives such -is '?tebrin is undoubtedly a great advance in the herapy of malaria. The untoward symptoms which are occasionally observed, their inability to prevent relapses in a certain percentage of cases and their not having a true prophylactic a?tion, inasmuch as they have no action on the ?P?rozoites injected by the mo...

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK Malaria is a protozoan infection caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium (P. falciparum, P. ovale, P. vivax, P. malariae) that is transmitted from one human to another by female Anopheles mosquitoes. It can be considered a reemerging imported disease in our area because of increasing of movements from endemic countries, and nowadays it is the most common impor...

Symadex is the lead acridine compound of a novel class of imidazoacridinones (IAs) currently undergoing phase II clinical trials for the treatment of various cancers. Recently, we have shown that Symadex is extruded by ABCG2-overexpressing lung cancer A549/K1.5 cells, thereby resulting in a marked resistance to certain IAs. To identify the IA residues essential for substrate recognition by ABCG...

Acridine-induced frameshift mutations in bacteriophage T4 occur at the precise location in the DNA at which acridines stimulate DNA cleavage by the T4-encoded type II topoisomerase in vitro. The mutations are duplications or deletions that begin precisely at the broken phosphodiester bond. In vivo, acridine-induced frameshift mutagenesis is reduced nearly to background levels when the topoisome...

Type II Human DNA Topoisomerases (topos II) play an essential role in DNA replication and transcription and are important targets for cancer chemotherapeutic drugs. Topoisomerase II causes transient double-strand breaks in DNA, forming a gate through which another double helix is passed, and acts as a DNA dependent ATPase. Mutations in topoII have been linked to atypical multi-drug resistance. ...
