We report on the progress of a NASA-funded study being carried out at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto and the California State University in Long Beach to investigate the proposed link between the zero-point field of the quantum vacuum and inertia. It is well known that an accelerating observer will experience a bath of radiation resulting from the quantum vacuum whi...
Aims. To study cosmological models in scalar tensor theories of gravity with power law potentials as models of an accelerating universe. Methods. We consider cosmological models in scalar tensor theories of gravity that describe an accelerating universe, and we study a family of inverse power law potentials, for which exact solutions of the Einstein equations are known. We also compare theoreti...
We find accelerating beams in a general periodic optical system, such as photonic crystal slabs, honeycomb lattices, and various metamaterials. These beams retain a shape-preserving profile while bending to highly non-paraxial angles along a circular-like trajectory. The properties of such beams depend on the crystal lattice structure: on a small-scale, the fine features of the beams profile ar...
We present a new Lorentz gauge invariant U(1) topological field theory in Riemann-Cartan spacetime manifold U4. By virtue of the decomposition theory of U(1) gauge potential and the φ–mapping topological current theory, it is proved that the U(1) complex scalar field φ(x) can be looked upon as the order parameter field in our Universe, and the set of zero points of φ(x) create the cosmic string...
We study nondiffracting accelerating paraxial optical beams in periodic potentials, in both the linear and the nonlinear domains. In particular, we show that only a unique class of z-dependent lattices can support a true accelerating diffractionless beam. Accelerating lattice solitons, autofocusing beams and accelerating bullets in optical lattices are systematically examined.
PURPOSE The design of a 3D in-line side-coupled 6 MV linac waveguide for medical use is given, and the effect of the side-coupling and port irises on the radio frequency (RF), beam dynamics, and dosimetric solutions is examined. This work was motivated by our research on a linac-MR hybrid system, where accurate electron trajectory information for a clinical medical waveguide in the presence of ...
Discrete body of revolution (DBOR) codes can accelerate moment method (MoM) solutions for scattering geometries possessing discrete circular symmetry. Traditional DBOR formulations require modifications to the incident field, such as decomposition into circular modes. While appropriate for methods employing direct solvers, approaches employing iterative solvers are disadvantaged by this dramati...
A proposed NLC polarized positron source utilizes a 150 GeV electron beam passing through a helical undulator. The resulting flux of polarized photons is converted in a thin positron production target. Spin polarized positrons are captured using a high field flux concentrator followed by an accelerator section immersed in a solenoidal field. Positron tracking through the accelerating and focusi...
in this thesis our aim is to construct vector field in r3 for which the corresponding one-dimensional maps have certain discontinuities. two kinds of vector fields are considered, the first the lorenz vector field, and the second originally introced here. the latter have chaotic behavior and motivate a class of one-parameter families of maps which have positive lyapunov exponents for an open in...
There is some ambiguity in the definitions and use of the concepts of spin tune and spin-orbit resonance on synchrobetatron orbits. We clarify these issues and provide a numerical illustration of the internal consistency of our definitions using the computer code SPRINT for HERA with a standard Siberian Snake arrangement. Furthermore, we demonstrate the calculation of the invariant spin field u...
