Under GCH, k(X) _< ~(X) for every homogeneous compactum X. CH implies that a homogeneous compactum of countable ~r-weight is first countable. There is a compact space of countable 7r-weight and uncountable character which is homogeneous under MA+-~CH, but not under CH.

The effect of waveguide boundary conditions on the spectrum resulting from the backscatter of lower hybrid waves near a waveguide array is calculated. It is found that the resulting k spectrum is peaked at multiples of 7r/b, where b is the waveguide width. This calculation may partially explain recent lower hybrid heating results on Alcator A.
