Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and practices of smoking cessation among physicians in Nigeria. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in Lagos and three geopolitical zones of Nigeria. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to obtain information on tobacco use and its health effects, as well as on the knowledge and practices of smoking cessation, from 436 physicians....

BACKGROUND Breast cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women in developed countries and in increasingly developing countries. In general, estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancers have a better prognosis and are often more responsive to anti-estrogen therapy. Unfortunately, ER-negative breast cancers are more aggressive and unresponsive to anti-estrogens. The aim of this...

We report precise Doppler measurements of GJ 436 (M2.5V) obtained at Keck Observatory. The velocities reveal a planetary companion with orbital period of 2.644 d, eccentricity of 0.12 (consistent with zero) and velocity semiamplitude of K = 18.1 m s . The minimum mass (M sin i ) for the planet is 0.067 MJUP = 1.2 MNEP = 21 MEARTH, making it the lowest mass exoplanet yet found around a main sequ...

In this paper, we concern with a conjecture involving the ratio of two gamma functions posed by Qi, Guo and Chen [Math. Inequal. Appl. 9(3)(2006), 427-436]. We also generalize a result of Qi [Theorem 2, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 214 (2008), 610-616]. Mathematics subject classification (2010): 33B15, 26A48, 26A51.

Unusual domains with curved walls and failure to satisfy the Landau–Lifshitz-Kittel Law are modeled as folding catastrophes (saddle-node bifurcations). This description of ballistic motion in a viscous medium is based upon early work by Dawber et al 2003 Appl. Phys. Lett. 82 436. It suggests that ferroelectric films can exhibit folds or vortex patterns but not both.

We sequenced a carbapenem-resistant Shewanella putrefaciens isolate cultured from the sink handle of a Pakistan hospital room. Assembly annotation indicates that the isolate has a chromosomal blaOXA-436 carbapenemase and a plasmid-borne blaNDM-1 gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a Shewanella species harboring blaNDM.

Thorecta reticulata Bergquist is a sponge of the family Thorectidae (order Dictyoceratida) collected from the Kaikoura Peninsula, New Zealand, by SCUBA at a depth of 20 m. Taxonomic identi"cation was provided by Professor Dame Patricia Bergquist, School of Biological Sciences, University of Auckland, and a voucher specimen (P.O.R. 436) has been deposited in the Museum of New Zealand, Wellington.

The case history is presented of a patient with acute respiratory failure complicated by nasal obstruction resulting in intolerance of nasal ventilation. Urgent insertion of nasal stents permitted restoration of ventilation with resolution of breathlessness and stabilisation of arterial blood gases. (Thorax 2000;55:434–436)

Cation-selective cysteine (Cys)-loop transmitter-gated ion channels provide an important pathway for Ca2+ entry into neurones. We examined the influence on Ca2+ permeation of amino acids located at intra- and extracellular ends of the conduction pathway of the human 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3A (5-HT3A) receptor. Mutation of cytoplasmic arginine residues 432, 436, and 440 to glutamine, aspartate...
