a thermodynamic analysis of the counter flow wet cooling tower (cwct) in the steelmaking unit of the khuzestan steel company (ksc) is performed in this paper. we evaluated both energy and exergy formulations for analyzing the heat and mass transfer, exergy and second-law efficiency in this cooling tower. the lewis factor le f is an indication of the relative rates of heat and mass transfer in a...

Temperature has a significant role in many actions performed on rocks. An example would be the effect of temperature on rocks in the burial of nuclear waste, geothermal energy extraction, deep oil well drilling, and fires in tunnels. In addition, due to diurnal/nocturnal as well as seasonal temperature variations, rocks undergo a process of heating and cooling. In the present work, the effect o...

The aim of this study was to identify different motile sperm subpopulations in ejaculates from an autochthonous bull breed (Bos taurus) and to determine possible modifications in these subpopulations resulting from cryopreservation. Ejaculates were collected and cryopreserved following a conventional protocol. The overall sperm motility and the kinematic parameters of individual spermatozoa wer...

The aim of the present study was to ascertain whether brain cooling causes attenuation of traumatic brain injury by reducing brain nitrostative and oxidative damage. Brain cooling was accomplished by infusion of 5 mL of 4°C saline over 5 minutes via the external jugular vein. Immediately after the onset of traumatic brain injury, rats were randomized into two groups and given 37°C or 4°C normal...

insurers have in the past few decades faced longevity risks - the risk that annuitants survive more than expected - and therefore need a new approach to manage this new risk. in this dissertation we survey methods that hedge longevity risks. these methods use securitization to manage risk, so using modern financial and insurance pricing models, especially wang transform and actuarial concepts, ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In infants with moderate to severe neonatal encephalopathy, whole-body cooling at 33°C to 34°C for 72 hours is standard care with a number needed to treat to prevent a adverse outcome of 6 to 7. The precise brain temperature providing optimal neuroprotection is unknown. METHODS After a quantified global cerebral hypoxic-ischemic insult, 28 piglets aged <24 hours were ra...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Localized head and neck cooling might be suited to induce therapeutic hypothermia in acute brain injury such as stroke. Safety issues of head and neck cooling are undetermined and may include cardiovascular autonomic side effects that were identified in this study. METHODS Ten healthy men (age 35±13 years) underwent 120 minutes of combined head and neck cooling (Sovika,...

A nitrogen-containing carbon (N-C) film was synthesized by pyrolysis of vapor phase polymerized polypyrrole (PPy). This carbon film exhibits excellent rate capability and cyclability as a lithium-ion battery anode. The reversible capacities are 908.4, 825.7, 664.0, 531.6, 415.5 and 325.9 mA h g(-1) at 1C, 2C, 5C, 10C, 20C and 40C, respectively.

By cooling the hypothalamus during hyperthermia, selective brain cooling reduces the drive on evaporative heat loss effectors, in so doing saving body water. To investigate whether selective brain cooling was increased in dehydrated sheep, we measured brain and carotid arterial blood temperatures at 5-min intervals in nine female Dorper sheep (41 +/- 3 kg, means +/- SD). The animals, housed in ...

I have been requested to put on paper a few facts relative to the cooling of the body after death. The subject, of interest generally, has become of special importance owing to the late trial, for murder, of a man named Gardner. This man was found guilty and doomed to be publicly strangled. His fate turned exclusively on the vague question whether a dead body could become cold on the external s...
