Phthalate esters (PEs) are important environmental pollutants. While the biodegradation of the parent compound, phthalate (PTH), is well characterized, the biodegradation of PEs is not well understood. In particular, prior to this study, genes involved in the uptake and hydrolysis of these compounds were not conclusively identified. We found that Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 could grow on a variety ...

7-Hydroxy-quinine was synthesized by an asymmetric aldol reaction that establishes the C8 and C9 stereochemistry, followed by construction of the 3-vinyl-quinuclidine azabicyclo[2.2.2]octane by C3-C4 ring closure using an intramolecular palladium-mediated allylic alkylation with excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity. This is the first report of a ketone-enolate-stereocontrolled allylic alky...

In the title salt, (C(8)H(15)N(3))[CdCl(4)], four Cl atoms coordinate the Cd(II) atom in a slightly distorted tetra-hedral geometry. In the crystal, each [CdCl(4)](2-) anion is connected to the 1-cyano-methyl-1,4-diazo-niabicyclo-[2.2.2]octane dications by N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, forming chains parallel to [001]. C-H⋯Cl inter-actions also occur.

Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) was first added to gasoline in Europe in 1973 to replace lead as an anti-knocking agent and as an octane enhancer (CAL-EPA, 1998). U.S. EPA approved it as a blending component in the U.S. in 1979, to eliminate the use of leaded gasoline. Typical MTBE levels used by refiners were around 2-3% by volume, blended in different proportions to achieve performance standards.

The possibility of petroleum residues (tar and oxidized bitumen) modification with formaldehyde (37 % aqueous solution) has been studied at the temperature 393±3 K for 3 h in presence organic solvent using hydrochloric acid as a catalyst. Toluene, p-xylene, naphta n-octane were used solvents amount 0–40 wt relative to initial material. By means IR spectroscopy resin-like compounds affecting ope...

The autoignition kinetics of hydrocarbons is an important criterion for selecting fuels piston reciprocating engines, and it can be determined by relative performance to mixtures alkanes, n-heptane iso-octane, under certain standardized operating conditions. 2-methylfuran a potential biofuel candidate, whose chemistry markedly different from alkanes. Its octane behavior when blended with paraff...

The catalyst-free multicomponent reaction of 1,2-diaminobenzene, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates, and ethyl bromopyruvate forms pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxaline derivatives in good yields. Ethylenediamine also reacts under similar conditions to produce new pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine derivatives.

The catalytic asymmetric phospha-Michael reaction of dialkyl phosphine oxides with β,β-disubstituted α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds was achieved. The products bearing tetrasubstituted carbon stereocenters were obtained in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee).

The growth of Pseudomonas oleovorans on n-octane was characterized by the formation of intracellular structures. These inclusions were isolated and characterized. Morphologically, they resembled the poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate granules found in Bacillus cereus, as shown by freeze-fracture electron microscopy. The elemental analysis of isolated granules showed, however, that they do not contain po...

In this contribution, we study situations in which nanoparticles in a fluid are strongly heated, generating high heat fluxes. This situation is relevant to experiments in which a fluid is locally heated by using selective absorption of radiation by solid particles. We first study this situation for different types of molecular interactions, using models for gold particles suspended in octane an...
