Transcription of two unfolded protein response genes, hacA and bipA, was examined in Aspergillus niger strains overproducing membrane proteins. Despite elevated bipA mRNA levels, no 5'-truncated hacA transcript was detected, raising the possibility of a hacA-independent induction of bipA mRNA under the stress of membrane protein overproduction in A. niger.

BACKGROUND Considering that the costs of cellulases and hemicellulases contribute substantially to the price of bioethanol, new studies aimed at understanding and improving cellulase efficiency and productivity are of paramount importance. Aspergillus niger has been shown to produce a wide spectrum of polysaccharide hydrolytic enzymes. To understand how to improve enzymatic cocktails that can h...

Twelve isolates of Trichoderma (six of T. harzianum, five of T. viride, one of T. virens), which reduced variably the incidence of collar rot disease caused in peanut by Aspergillus niger Van Tieghem, were evaluated for their potential to produce lytic enzymes during in vitro antagonism. T. viride 60 inhibited highest (86.2%) growth of test fungus followed by T. harzianum 2J (80.4%) at 6 days a...

D-Galacturonic acid, the main monomer of pectin, is an attractive substrate for bioconversions, since pectin-rich biomass is abundantly available and pectin is easily hydrolyzed. l-Galactonic acid is an intermediate in the eukaryotic pathway for d-galacturonic acid catabolism, but extracellular accumulation of l-galactonic acid has not been reported. By deleting the gene encoding l-galactonic a...

Conidial germination is fundamentally important to the growth and dissemination of most fungi. It has been previously shown (K. Hayer, M. Stratford, and D. B. Archer, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 79:6924-6931, 2013, http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/AEM.02061-13), using sugar analogs, that germination is a 2-stage process involving triggering of germination and then nutrient uptake for hyphal outgrowth. I...

Oilseeds are rich sources of micronutrients and contribute to combating malnutrition caused by micronutrient deficiency. The objective of this study was to investigate the mineral and anti-nutritional contents of different varieties of niger seed, linseed and sesame. Five niger seed, eight linseed and ten sesame varieties were used. Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-A...

Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, recently used for the first time the integrated verbal and social autopsy (VASA) tool to assess the biological causes and social and health system determinants of neonatal and child deaths. These notes summarize the Nigerien experience in the use of this new tool, the steps taken for high level engagement of the Niger government and stakeholders...

The study is concerned with the isolation and screening of Aspergillus niger strains for the biosynthesis of acid protease using solid state fermentation. Thirteen A. niger strains capable of producing proteases were isolated from the soil. Of all the isolates, Aspergillus niger IHG9 was found to be the best producer of protease. Different agricultural by-products were evaluated as fermentation...

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the competition of soybean intercropped with niger in different planting ratios using randomized complete block design with four replications at Sari agricultural sciences and natural resources university in 2018 and 2019. The intercropping ratios were 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 (soybean:niger, respectively) using the replacement series. R...

In Niger, the epidemiological situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease is unclear as many outbreaks are unreported. This study aimed (i) to identify Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) strains currently circulating in cattle herds, and (ii) to identify risk factors associated with Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-seropositive animals in clinical outbreaks. Epithelial tissues (n = 25) and sera (n ...
