Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a disease, that causes considerable morbidity in patients. A histological hallmark of the disorder is the formation of sinus tracts in the dermis and the subcutis. Biologically, they represent a poorly understood phenomenon involving the infiltrative growth of proliferating non-malignant keratinocytes. Lipid domains in plasma membranes (lipid rafts) play a role ...

Low doses of the alkylating agent cyclophosphamide (CTX) mediate antiangiogenic and immunostimulatory effects, leading to potent tumoricidal activity in association with various immunotherapeutic strategies. Here, we show in rodents and cancer patients that CTX markedly promotes the differentiation of CD4þ T helper 17 (Th17) cells that can be recovered in both blood and tumor beds. However, CTX...

A clinical strain of Escherichia coli isolated from pleural liquid with high levels of resistance to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, and aztreonam harbors a novel CTX-M gene (bla(CTX-M-32)) whose amino acid sequence differs from that of CTX-M-1 by a single Asp240-Gly substitution. Moreover, by site-directed mutagenesis we demonstrated that this replacement is a key event in ceftazidime hydrolysis

Escherichia coli bacteria with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) type CTX-M resistance were isolated from water samples collected close to research stations in Antarctica. The isolates had bla(CTX-M-1) and bla(CTX-M-15) genotypes and sequence types (ST) indicative of a human-associated origin. This is the first record of ESBL-producing enterobacteria from Antarctica.

The incidence of ESBL-producing bacteria is increasing worldwide, which represents a challenge for the healthcare systems. More recently, the emergence of the CTX-M group has been frequently reported as being associated with both nosocomial and community acquired infections. CTX-M-15 was identified as being the most prevalent in a large geographic area including Europe and the Middle East, sugg...

Pandemic V. cholerae strains in the O1 serogroup have 2 biotypes: classical and El Tor. The classical biotype strains of the sixth pandemic, which encode the classical type cholera toxin (CT), have been replaced by El Tor biotype strains of the seventh pandemic. The prototype El Tor strains that produce biotype-specific cholera toxin are being replaced by atypical El Tor variants that harbor cl...

The rate of occurrence of the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing phenotype among Escherichia coli isolates in Tel Aviv is 12% (22). The aim of this study was to understand the molecular epidemiology of E. coli ESBL producers and to identify the ESBL genes carried by them. We studied 20 single-patient ESBL-producing E. coli clinical isolates. They comprised 11 distinct nonrelated ...

A set of alloreactive IL-2-dependent human CD4+ 45RA-w29+56- Th cell clones was divided into two groups according to their ability to respond to IL-4 by proliferation and their susceptibility to inhibition by TNF-alpha. The latter cytokine blocked proliferative responses to IL-2 of IL-4-nonresponsive clones, but did not affect proliferation of IL-4-responsive clones. In the present communicatio...
