We report the draft whole-genome sequences of two Vibrio cholerae O1 strains, the environmental toxigenic strain 2011EL-301 and the clinical nontoxigenic strain P-18785, both isolated in Russia. Some basic data comparing the two against the GenBank repository are provided.
Isolation and genetic characterization of an environmental Vibrio cholerae O1 from the Amazon is reported. This strain lacks two major virulence factors - CTX and TCP - but carries other genes related to virulence. Genetic similarity with epidemic strains is evaluated and the importance of V. cholerae surveillance in the Amazon is emphasized.
background: cholera, an infectious disease caused by vibrio cholerae , is primarily transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food or water. in severe cases, cholera may lead to severe dehydration, metabolic acidosis, and ultimately, hypovolemic shock and death. methods: in this study v.cholerae non-o1 was cultured in suitable media. lps was extracted from the surface of bacteria by hot pheno...
background: epidemic and endemic cholera is a major public health problem for many countries. aim of this study was to evaluate ap-pcr for investigation of clonal relatedness among the strains of vibrio cholerae recovered from an outbreak occurred in different parts of iran in 2005. methods: the study was conducted during the cholera outbreak occurred in some of provinces in iran in summer 2...
OBJECTIVE This study reports re-emergence of Vibrio cholerae O139 in Pakistan in 2000-2001 from a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS This descriptive study was conducted from 2000-2001. Stool samples were taken from inpatients or those referred to the laboratory from other hospitals, clinics and general practitioners. Samples were processed and Vibrio cholerae isolates were ...
Here, we present the draft whole-genome sequence of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains 76 and M3265/80, isolated in Mariupol, Ukraine, and Moscow, Russia. The presence of various mutations detected in virulence-associated mobile elements indicates high genetic similarity of the strains reported here with new highly virulent variants of the cholera agent V. cholerae.
A total of 31 strains of Vibrio cholerae O1 (10 from outbreak cases and 7 from surface water) and non-O1 (4 from clinical and 10 from surface water sources) isolated between 1993 and 1997 were examined with respect to presence of cholera enterotoxin (CT) gene by PCR-based assays, resistance to antibiotics, plasmid profiles and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. All were resistant...
A new selective and differential agar medium, polymyxin-mannose-tellurite (PMT) agar was devised to differentiate easily colonies of Vibrio cholerae O1 from those of V. cholerae non-O1. The differentiation between colonies of the two vibrios is based on mannose-fermentation. Colonies of V. cholerae O1 on the agar are agglutinated with O1 antiserum of V. cholerae much more easily than those on t...
An epidemic of a cholera-like disease occurred among Khmers in a camp in Aranyaprathet, Thailand, in May 1990. Of 215 patients with diarrhea, Vibrio cholerae O1 was isolated from 25 (12%) and V. cholerae non-O1 was isolated from 15 (7%). Five of 15 (33%) non-O1 V. cholerae isolates hybridized with two different oligonucleotide probes previously used to detect V. cholerae non-O1 that produces a ...
Vibrio cholerae O139 is a recently identified non-O1 V. cholerae strain responsible for outbreaks of epidemic cholera in India, Bangladesh, and Thailand in the past 2 years. Other workers have demonstrated the presence of the cholera toxin genetic element in V. cholerae O139, unlike the situation for other non-O1 V. cholerae strains. We sought to compare further this strain with strains of V. c...
