Background: Due to discharge of industrial effluent into marine environment, background quantity of heavy metals and their bioaccumulation in marine organism's body including fish is increasing. Thus, determination of mercury content in fish consumed by human is an essential thing.   Methods: In order to evaluate the mercury content of canned tuna fish marketed in Kerman, 70 canned tuna fish ...

The levels of total mercury and methyl mercury were measured in 40 tuna cans prepared from Persian Gulf tuna, in Tehran, Iran during 2010. The total mercury and methyl mercury concentrations were determined with a GBC 906 AA flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) and a Thermo gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS), respectively. The results showed that the means of total mercury and m...

Here, we generated a genome-scale shRNA library targeting long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNAs) in the mouse. We performed an unbiased loss-of-function study in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) and identified 20 lincRNAs involved in the maintenance of pluripotency. Among these, TUNA (Tcl1 Upstream Neuron-Associated lincRNA, or megamind) was required for pluripotency and formed a complex w...

A preliminary study on species composition of a Korean purse seine catch landed at cannery was conducted in April 2011. In the cannery, all tuna catch are sliding through a sorting grid panel that filters and drops fish in the buckets by size class (above 9 kg, 3.4-9 kg, 1.8-3.4 kg, 1.4-1.8 kg and below 1.4 kg). In cannery processing, species sorting was made for skipjack and yellowfin tuna onl...

Tropical tuna fisheries are among the largest worldwide, with some having significant bycatch issues. However, pole-and-line tuna fisheries are widely believed to have low bycatch rates, although these have rarely been quantified. The Maldives has an important pole-and-line fishery, targeting skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). In the Maldives, 106 pole-and-line tuna fishing days were observed ...

This study was to utilize the waste from canned tuna processing (tuna precooking juice) for producing dried tuna flavor powder. Tuna precooking juice was centrifuged and concentrated to 15% total soluble solid (TSS). Maltodextrin (DE 9) was added to increase the TSS of tuna precooking concentrate to 20, 22, 24 and 26%, then dried by spray dryer at 180oC inlet air temperature. The compositions a...

Tuna are large pelagic fish whose populations are close to panmixia. In addition, they are threatened species, so it is important for the maintenance and monitoring of genetic diversity that genetic information at a genome level be obtained. Here we report the draft assembly of the southern bluefin tuna genome and the collection of genome-wide sequence data for five other tuna species. We sampl...

Total mercury was measured in 156 composites prepared from 936 samples of canned tuna sold in Canada in 2006. Each composite comprised a single brand. Yellowfin tuna contained the lowest concentrations, averaging 0.066 mg/kg. Skipjack tuna contained slightly higher concentrations, averaging 0.132 mg/kg. The highest average concentration was found in the Albacore tuna: mean 0.325 mg/kg, range 0....

This paper describes an Automated Visual Inspection System SIVATUN" for quality control of Tuna Meat which automate manual inspection operation. Depending on whether tuna are reared in cages or in the open sea and depending on the method of capture (electroslaughtering, shooting, etc.), differences are observed and changes take place in the organic nature of Blue Fin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus) meat...

BACKGROUND Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) constitutes a major clinical problem. Minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of symptomatic BPH include Transurethral Needle Ablation (TUNA), but it is unclear what impact this technique has on the disease and its role among other currently available therapeutic options. The objective of this study is to ascertain the efficacy and safety of ...
