BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The pulpal chamber of each tooth contains the vasculature necessary to maintain a viable tooth. A critical need exists to develop an objective, repeatable method to assess pulpal viability. We hypothesized that the existence of blood perfusion within the pulp can be determined with analysis of laser speckle imaging (LSI) patterns generated by transillumination of the to...

PURPOSE To examine the incidence and pattern of iris transillumination defects in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) with and without vascular dysregulation, in comparison to controls. METHODS We prospectively examined 24 patients with POAG (M/F 10:14; mean age 59 +/- 14, range 21-76 years) and 23 controls (M/F 10:13; mean age 52 +/- 15, range 25-86 years). Vascular dysregulatio...

We present a novel iris repair technique for the management of iris transillumination defects secondary to iris pigment epithelium (IPE) loss, which includes iris oversewing over the defect through partial iris stromal bites with 10-0 polypropylene. This technique provides a healthy layer of iris covering the transillumination defect without the creation of new defects on the contiguous IPE.

Hand-held near-infrared (NIR) optical imagers are developed by various researchers towards non-invasive clinical breast imaging. Unlike these existing imagers that can perform only reflectance imaging, a generation-2 (Gen-2) hand-held optical imager has been recently developed to perform both reflectance and transillumination imaging. The unique forked design of the hand-held probe head(s) allo...

Bilateral acute iris transillumination (BAIT) is a relatively new clinical entity characterized by bilateral acute loss of iris pigment epithelium, iris transillumination, pigment dispersion in the anterior chamber, and sphincter paralysis. We report the case of a 30-year-old male who was initially diagnosed with acute iridocyclitis in a different clinic and treated with topical and systemic co...
