Infantile tibia vara (ITV) is an acquired form of tibial deformity associated with tibial varus and internal torsion. As there is currently insufficient data available on the effects of orthotics on gait parameters, this study aimed to document the influence of orthosis on walking. A male infant with bilateral tibia vara used orthoses for five months. Gait evaluations were performed pre- and po...
Blount's disease, or tibia vara, is the most common cause of pathologic genu varum in children and adolescents. Changes in the loading of knee structures such as tibial articular cartilage, menisci and subcondral bone are well documented in case of genu varum. But the mechanical effects of this condition on foot bones are still questionable. In this study, the authors hypothesized that stress d...
We report five patients with tibia vara due to focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia of the medial aspect of the proximal tibia. In three patients spontaneous correction occurred, while in one of the remaining two treated by operation, a valgus deformity and neurological complications resulted. Conservative management is therefore recommended.
PURPOSE Past classification for the treatment of idiopathic genu vara depended simply on the measurement of distance between the knees, without attention to the rotational profile of the lower extremity. We retrospectively analyzed anatomical causes of idiopathic genu vara. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty eight patients with idiopathic genu vara were included in this study. All patients were surg...
PURPOSE To identify and quantify the presence of extra-articular tibia vara that might influence the mechanical axis alignment after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 48 TKAs in 30 osteoarthritic Indian patients were prospectively evaluated. The hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA), joint line convergence angle, and varus angulation at the femur and tibia were measured fro...
BACKGROUND Many osteotomy methods and fixation types have been used to correct the misalignment observed in tibia vara and to achieve a more uniform distribution of weight across the knee joint. PURPOSE The aim of this study is to test the efficacy and safety of a modified closing wedge high tibial osteotomy (CWHTO) procedure for tibia vara. METHODS In this prospective study, young adults w...
Late-onset tibia vara or Blount's disease is the most common cause of pathologic genu varum in children and adolescents. Treatment remains controversial. Many studies in the past have shown that an osteotomy with acute correction is the most appropriate treatment. More recently however, there has been a growing interest, especially in severe cases, in using gradual correction with the Ilizarov ...
