Thyroid hormone excess due to any cause is state of thyrotoxicosis, whereas hyperthyroidism is a state of thyroid hormone excess due to hyperfunctioning of thyroid gland. The major causes of thyrotoxicosis include Graves’ disease, solitary toxic adenoma, and toxic multinodular goiter. In thyrotoxicosis, free hormone levels are invariably increased. The reverse is not true in that increased free...

Thyrotoxicosis, a clinical syndrome characterized by manifestations of excess thyroid hormone, is one of the commonly-recognised conditions of the thyroid gland. Thyrotoxicosis causes acceleration of bone remodelling and though it is one of the known risk factors for osteoporosis, the metabolic effects of thyroxine on bone are not well discussed. Studies show that thyroid hormones have effects ...

The generic term thyrotoxicosis defines the clinical syndrome of hypermetabolism associated with excess amounts of circulating free thyroxine (T4) and (or) triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations, irrespective of the source of the excess hormones. The term hyperthyroidism is reserved for those patients with thyrotoxicosis caused by increased synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones from the gla...

This report describes three women with hyperemesis gravidarum caused by previously undiagnosed thyrotoxicosis. All three women were eight weeks pregnant and only one woman had typical features of thyrotoxicosis. Hyperemesis could not be controlled by anti-emetics. The patients were successfully treated with antithyroid drugs. Anti-thyroid treatment does not need to be continued once resolution ...

150 microg iodine are daily required for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has intrinsic mechanisms that maintain normal thyroid function even in the presence of iodine excess. Large quantities of iodide are present in drugs, antiseptics, contrast media and food preservatives. Iodine induced hyperthyroidism is frequently observed in patients affected by euthyroid iodine deficient goi...

The most common causes of thyrotoxicosis in Japan are silent thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. For patients with thyrotoxicosis present in early pregnancy, both gestational thyrotoxicosis and undiagnosed Graves’ disease must be considered. Silent thyroiditis is a rare condition during pregnancy. Postpartum thyroiditis is a variant of silent thyroiditis that occurs in the postpartum period, a few...

Our objective is to report a case of thyrotoxicosis following pituitary adenectomy for Cushing's disease, the only pediatric case to our knowledge. No thyroid antibodies were detected, and the thyrotoxicosis was successfully treated for 3 months with no relapse after 5 years of follow-up. The cause of thyrotoxicosis remains unknown.

Many neurological diseases like myopathy, periodic paralysis, ophthalmoplegia, and myasthenia gravis are known associations of thyrotoxicosis. However the association of neuropathy with thyrotoxicosis is not frequently recognized. First described by Charcot in 1889, thyrotoxic neuropathy or 'Basedow's Paraplegia' is a rarely reported entity. We describe here a case of a young woman with subacut...
