Stable sulfur isotope measurements (delta34S) made on samples collected from a 2 m snowpit on the Inilchek Glacier, Tien Shan Mountains (42.16 degrees N, 80.25 degrees E, 5100 m) are used to estimate sources of sulfate (SO4(2-)) in high-elevation Central Asian precipitation. Comparison of snowpit oxygen isotope (delta18O) data with previous work constrains the age of the snowpit samples to the ...

We report new data on oxygen isotopes in marine sulfate (d18OSO4), measured in marine barite (BaSO4), over the Cenozoic. The d18OSO4 varies by 6x over the Cenozoic, with major peaks 3, 15, 30 and 55 Ma. The d 18OSO4 does not co-vary with the d 34SSO4, emphasizing that different processes control the oxygen and sulfur isotopic composition of sulfate. This indicates that temporal changes in the d...

Mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of sulfur isotopes has been reported in sediments of Archean and Early Proterozoic Age (> 2.3 Ga) but not in younger rocks. The only fractionation mechanism that is consistent with the data on all four sulfur isotopes involves atmospheric photochemical reactions such as SO2 photolysis. We have used a one-dimensional photochemical model to investigate how the...

The first detection of a 36 S-bearing molecule in interstellar space is reported. The J=2−1 and 3−2 transitions of C 36 S have been observed toward eight Galactic molecular hot cores. From a comparison with other optically thin isotopic species of CS, the abundance ratio of 34 S/ 36 S is 115(±17). This is smaller than the solar system ratio of 200 and supports the idea that 36 S is, unlike the ...

High-resolution geochemical analyses of organic-rich shale and carbonate through the 2500 million-year-old Mount McRae Shale in the Hamersley Basin of northwestern Australia record changes in both the oxidation state of the surface ocean and the atmospheric composition. The Mount McRae record of sulfur isotopes captures the widespread and possibly permanent activation of the oxidative sulfur cy...

Mass-dependently fractionated (MDF) sulfur isotopes in sedimentary sulfides and sulfates can provide information on the past activity of microbial metabolisms and serve as a proxy for the concentration of seawater sulfate. In conjunction with these proxies, mass-independently fractionated (MIF) sulfur isotopes can be used to track the rise of atmospheric oxygen. The anoxic–oxic transition of th...

Masses, deformations, radii, and single-particle properties of the very neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes are investigated in the framework of the self-consistent mean-field theory. The stability of the N=28 magic gap around 44 S is discussed.

One of the most striking aspects of the 11-year sunspot cycle is that there have been times in the past when some cycles went missing, a most well-known example of this being the Maunder minimum during 1645-1715. Analyses of cosmogenic isotopes ((14)C and (10)Be) indicated that there were about 27 grand minima in the last 11,000 yrs, implying that about 2.7% of the solar cycles had conditions a...
